2017 Nissan Rogue 2.5 - 5W-30?

Yes, I concur.......to an extent. I don't know how many -0 degree days you've experienced in Eastern Wa......But I'll tell you, in New York, when we get a " Polar Express" come thru in the winter, it can get down to -5 without the wind chill effect. That 5W30 flows good until you hit 5 degrees. Even using the 0W20, my Honda is not happy at those temps. Let her warm up good before I leave to get all the juices flowing. Cylinder head valves clackin away, shakin and carrying on ( I''d do the same too if I were out in the cold all night . LOL ).........So, for ME, a more moderate temperature climate, I wold go for the 5W30. That's just MY personal experience.
Any grade with a 5W winter rating is guaranteed to flow to the pump pickup tube in temperatures of about -30 or so. Once it flows to the pickup it will pump.

Hmmm....Old dog learned something new today. Had no clue. I thought it only flowed until it reached that temp, then became molasses :). Thanks for updating my cobwebbed brain, kschachn. Another reason why I love this forum :) All of you are so helpful !!!

OP, I just checked my 2013 Nissan owners manual. We have the same 2.5L engine (QR25DE) and Nissan says 5W-30 is "preferable". It goes on to say if it is not available to use the temperature-viscosity chart, which depending on temperature lists 5W30, 5W40, 10W30, 10W40,...,20W50.

Suitable oil specification is also a long list, but effectively API SL (or above), or ILSAC GF-5 (or above), or Euro ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 or A5/B5 or C2 or C3.

The car is in Australia, but I'm fairly certain the car was made in Japan and this is the global owners manual for the whole world.

I'm using a full synthetic 5W30 that is API SN-Plus and ACEA C3.

If this falls under the oil consumption years I’d go right to Valvoline R&P 5w-30.
It doesn’t. That was the early 2.5 that was eating its own pre cat. Strangely I had an 03 (best car I ever owned) that never had an issue. A deer crossed paths with it @ 167k or it would probably still be running. Back then the internet wasn’t as in your face as today so I was unaware of the problem. The dealer did do a reflash even though they knew it wasn’t the issue. Some of the 07-09s had rings that never seated but it was nowhere near the dusted engines that the early 2Ks had. My 18 rogue sets @110k and doesn’t use a drop. It’s always seen 0-20 until here of late, it’s been getting Hps 5-20. I tried 5-30 once and could tell the difference right away. Never used it again. But, that’s just me. In the end the 2.5 has been one of Nissans best engines, once the bug were worked out. Now they have a turbo charged sump pump motor with a plastic oil pan.

I agree there is nearly no difference between a 0&5W20. But what did you notice/experience with a 5W30?

People will argue that I’m wrong but, fuel mileage #1. The car wasn’t dragging but I could for sure tell a snappiness in the engine and cvt. While some act like your engine suddenly becomes quieter and just all around sounds better. I didn’t notice anything outside of a little more start up noise, at least on my application. I changed it out after I got home. We had a condo in Myrtle beach and I thought the extra weight would be good running through the Appalachians in the summer heat. In 110k I only used 5-30 for around 2k miles. My car doesn’t use oil and runs like a clock on 0-20. I’m sure that the average driver could never tell a difference, but I’m pretty in tuned with my cars. I never have to worry about a blown speaker because I never turn the radio on. My wife wears her AirPods and watches her real housewife marathons.

It’s minimal but there’s definitely going to be drag with a 5W30 over a 0W20 especially at start up. Snappiness, You mean as in feeling more oil pressure? I ran a 10W30 in my 08 Sonata a few times I could tell a slight boost in oil pressure with the 30Wt. I picked my rouge up with 58k have a little over 65k and as you mentioned. spoke with the previous owner and mechanic vehicle always seen 0W20 though I have tossed the thought around running a 5W30 the vehicle runs like a top with the 0W20 plus my wife’s new rogue takes 0W20 so it also keeps my stash simplified. What are you doing for oil filters?

I did a cvt drain/fill/drain/fill and replaced the cooler cartridge filter at 60K and a brake fluid flush maybe 1500 miles ago. Vehicle will be 10 years old next year so I’m planning on a coolant flush real soon. I’m shy of the 105k I think the manual says Asian blue long life is good for but that 10 year mark scares me.

10 years is enough on coolant in my eyes. I shoot for 5 years when I get the chance. I don't believe everything I read on these coolant gallons. You're doing an excellent job on PM's. Keep it the good work and it will serve you well.

Yes one is a 30-grade and one is a 20-grade.
