2014 Honda CRV

Looking at a 2014 Honda CRV at a local dealer.

It is a one owner with only 26,000. Squeaky clean car fax, etc.

Has AWD and sunroof.

Looks like this year of CRV is pretty good.

Dealer is asking 18K for it. It looks like a brand new CRV practically with that low of miles.

What do you guys think on this one?
 
18k isn’t awful for that with those miles. How’s it look in person?

No rust at all, everything looks like 26,000 miles on it. Paint is a really nice metallic gray and has no dings, scratches, etc. Rims are perfect.

At that mileage and model year, it might still have the original TPMS sensors, but they are on borrowed time if so. Look at the age of the tires, too.
Yes, I think the tires on this are probably OEM so have gone too far past the 5 or whatever year DOT date range for safety. I'll have to research this for sure as it might be a negotiating point.
 
I believe CRVs use an indirect TPMS system, so no sensors to replace. Seems like a lot for an 11 year old car. MSRP on a new one is $33k, but considerable negotiating room.

I'll have to definitely take a run at getting the price down, but I have looked at 100's of vehicles over the past few weeks. Japanese brands with low miles are tough to find at "reasonable" prices. And this one seems to be pretty good as it was the last model in that generation and was the last model with a non-CVT.

Honestly, if he is still a grand or so too high, the alternatives are Ford Escapes, Dodge Journeys, Equinoxes, Kia,etc.
 
I think it's too much but if it checks all your boxes go for it. CRV's are very reliable, high in resale value, and are nice drivers. Problem is the fact that it's getting old and if you ever want to sell it with 50,000 miles the price will go way down. It's over 10 years old but will last almost forever with good maintenance. It's all about the rust when it comes to 10 year old vehicles and not so much about how the paint or interior looks. I looked at a 2024 Civic Sport the other day for $19,999 and a 2024 Civic for $ 17,999 both rebuilt salvage title cars but they looked showroom fresh. It's all about what you want or feel is a good deal. If you're married and the wife is ok with it write out the check.
 
Solid car. I have a 2012 with the same engine/transmission. The car has no character whatsoever and I refuse to believe it has 190 horsepower. The transmission is dull and slow shifting so the car is a very boring drive but who cares? Mine's at 107,000 no engine problems just bad back suspension and the starter died at 100K.

Keep an eye on the transmission fluid as the car tends to develop a judder around 25-30 miles per hour as it shifts from 2 to 3. If you keep the fluid fresh it's manageable.
 
Used Japanese vehicles are poor values.

How much is a new one similarly equipped?

If you really want that body style it may be a good pick. And if the price is right you’ll know compared to a new or two year old used (because you can assume that the typical car gets driven 12k/yr). Then you can make a choice based upon perceived value proposition.
 
At 11 years old price is too high even with low miles. All fluids need to be changed because of age.
All fluids should be changed when buying a used vehicle. That’s standard procedure. Changing all the fluids in that CRV, including brake fluid and coolant, will cost $200 max. Mouse nuts IMO. It’s the cost of doing business.

They use the antilock tone rings to measure tire diameter- low pressure= smaller diameter compared to opposite tire.
 
2 things to watch for.

Warm it up, and idle it with AC off. Does the cabin shudder and vibrate? They had issues with this and there were a couple of fixes for it.

Cruise around at “Christmas light looking speed.” With the AC off. Does it sound like the AC compressor is on and growling? Ours did that and it was the CVT.

Drive 70. Are you ok with the cabin noise? Does your EPS feel “sticky” making it hard to drive perfectly and smoothly straight?

We loved ours but parted with it early.
