My father picked up a new beautiful 2014 Camaro SS 6-speed automatic beast of a car and I have a few questions. Currently the car has 500 miles on it and I am torn between what to do for it's first oil change. Should we just go to a certain amount of miles (3-3,500k), or go by what the oil life monitor says and maybe change at %50 life or so. Another question is what kind of oil does GM dealerships use? The car has the 2yr/24,000 mile free oil changes deal. Do you think that means Mobil 1 or regular fleet GM oil will be put into the car? Thanks for any input.

Use the OLM. No way to know what brand oil your dealer uses without asking. Dealerships are all independent franchises.

Should we go to a certain %? Or wait until it's into the 10% range?

I always liked to do it early but there is various schools of thought on both sides of the argument.

3 miles to 3,500,000 miles is a pretty big range. 3 miles is certainly too early, and 3.5 million is certainly too far. Nonetheless, I know what you meant. See what the manual says, but I'd consider going at least half the dictated OCI or follow the OLM to 10%. Basically, I wouldn't be negligent about the first oil change, but I wouldn't rush to change it right after I got the car, either.

The dealer will certainly use their dexos1 certified AC Delco oil, as Trav indicates.

Oops lol

I have a '14 2SS/RS LS3. Since you already paid for four oil changes, get them whenever you want. I did my first one at 1000 at the request of my tuner, right before several trips to redline during dynotuning.

The oil fill cap says "Dexos1" which means you will not be getting M1 which is fine during break-in and another reason to do short OCIs. I will go about 3000 miles on each of the next three dealer supplied changes then DIY with M1 to the OLM at which point I will do a couple of used oil analysis to confirm the OLM's accuracy. But, with an 8 qt sump, you aren't going to wear out the oil. Its more a question of your comfort level with break-in contaminants.
