Good evening folks, have a question about what oil I should be using for a 2013 VW Passat with the 2.5. Has a little over 100k on it. I usually use in all my cars and customers cars, from Nissans to Chevys, Valvoline HM Full Synthetic 5w30 and love it. I confused on what oil to run in this particular car. I’d like to keep running Valvoline in it but I’m reading use 5w30 but 5w40 is better and 10w30 is better than 5w30 for a VW. Confused what they’re saying. I see that Valvoline has a European formula that is 5w40. Should I use that instead? I do really like the max life HM though. Either way this car will get oil changes every 4-5k miles. Thats just what I do. I prefer to use Valv, I don’t like Castrol or Mobil. Thanks for any input folks! I’m new to these European cars. Take care.

Those engines are reliable and have a large sump. I doubt that engine would have any consequences if you use a non Euro 5W30 in it at the 5K OCI's you prefer. However, the Euro 5W40 might have a lower NOACK if it has a Mercedes approval compared to a non Euro 5W30. The VW 502 approved oils have a higher HTHS than typical API oils. A 0W30 VW 502 oil is thicker at high temps than most all 10W30's on the market.

thank you very much! That helps a lot! This car is going to be mostly around town driving not so much hard highway driving etc so it’s not like the oil is going to be abused. Thanks again for the breakdown!

Outside warranty, I regularly ran whatever sale brand plain current API spec 5W-30 full synthetic oil in my then 2013 VW Jetta with the same 2.5 engine. There is really nothing special about the 2.5 that really needed a Euro spec 5W-40. Just a plain port injected non-turbo engine other than being a 5 cylinder making it unique.

Right! I’ll just run the regular Valv Hm synthetic. Thanks! The more I research the more I learn it is pretty basic. Thanks again!

Where are you based? Your coldest winter night dictates what 0/5/10W-X is required.
Generally anything Euro spec, say VW 502 00, VW 504 00, MB 229.5, 229.51, 229.52,
BMW LL-01 or LL-04 (true approvals). If so, it doesn't even matter if it's 0W-30, 5W-30,
0W-40 or 5W-40. The 30s are actually thick 30s, the 40s are thin 40s. Extremely close.
As mentioned before ynything VW 504 00/MB 229.51/BMW LL-04 etc. 5W-30 is thicker
than a plain API 5W-30. HTHS of 3.5/3.6 mPas vs just 3.0-3.2 mPas. While this particular
engine isn't delicate it's still developed with VW 502 00 and VW 504 00, say with a min.
HTHS of 3.5 mPas in mind.

City driving is harder on oil than any hwy abuse!
Use oil that has MB229.5 or MB229.51/52 in addition to VW specifications like VW502.00 (that engine) or VW504.00/507.00 (backward compatible with VW502.00).
If you can get Valvoline XLIII cheap through vendor, use it. If not, Mobil1 0W40 or Mobil1 ESP 0W30 (would go this one) from Wal Mart.

Had a 2013 Jettta wagon with the 2.5. Great engine, would take anything I threw at it and just shrugged it off. Pretty versatile with a wide range of oils and doesn't really tax any of them, however, as @930.engineering mentioned, it WAS designed around Euro spec style oils for several reasons. Amazon currently has the XLIII for $37 a jug, but sometimes much less.

thank you! That brings back the Valvoline Euro 5w40. Thinking I should use that instead. It is Volks approved.

yes it is! Sorry about that. Long day not thinking issue lol… I really want to stay with Valvoline. Again if I’m charging it every 5k it might not be to much of a worry using the HM Valv which I really like.

I mean, your call, but it won’t match protection of Valvoline XLIII. Far from it.
Truth is, that engine is easy on oil. But, for the process of XLIII, IMO, no brainer.

The XLIII isn’t available near me just an online thing. What’s my best option here that would work best? A 5w40 with the VW rating 50200?

Sometimes Valvoline has sales, I have quite a bit of the XL-III so just go over there and add an acct and sign up for their marketing emails.
