I posted a thread in the PCMO section a few days ago concerning oil. Replies started going in other directions....so......

I traded in an 09 Accord Coupe EX-L 2.4/M5 for a new 2012 Mustang V6/M6 Premium-Pony. Looking for a smoother ride and LESS ROAD NOISE. The Mustang definitely has those qualities in spades over the Accord.

I was concerned though about the mileage penalty going from a 2.4 4 cyl. to a 305 HP 3.7 V6, both cars manual trans. The first tank was all flat interstate at 70mph-182mi/5.3 gal=34.4mpg. I was impressed, but thought it might have been a bubble in the tank or just a fluke.

Wife made a couple of commutes this week with city driving mixed in 251mi/7.9gal=31.8mpg. These figures are a a couple MPG BETTER than the Accord. Seems Ford has stepped up their game, I had been away from Ford for many years. Fit ,finish, ride and MPG are as good or better than this last Honda(my third Honda)

Just thought I would post this as FYI general info, not trying to sell, just impressed.

Holy censored words. That is really awesome fuel economy dude. I can say that I am impressed with that. Sounds like a pretty cool car. The 3.7 is leaps and bounds better than the Windstar/Thunderbird 3.8 of yesteryear.

Wow that fuel economy is amazing for a V6 with that much power. My 2.7 V6 pushing 200 ponies gets about 30MPG going downhill with the wind at my back going 70!

Beautiful car though, definitely should treat you well!

You must have HATED that accord. Dont Park the 'Stang near the 'Vette or you may end up with [censored] offspring

Nice high tech Lincoln DOHC V6 engine vs Old 302 = No Contest. New Wins.

That's amazing! I would have never thought this in a million years. And the fuel economy is equally impressive. My 3-liter manual 5-series can't touch it.

Beautiful looking car. Congrats! How much do these things cost if you don't mind me asking?

I just wish they would redisign the instrument cluster... the speedo/tach looks too retro for me.

Its amazing the perceptions and misconsceptions regarding gas mileage for American cars and Japan and European- We all assume too much one way or another without actually testing for ourselves.

When I first bought a BMW 325i I was expecting poor mileage as I was driving a 4 cyl econ-o-box before- Sure enough the BMW was getting me 31 on the highway and my average was 25. (Verified by BMW on board computer)

Do you think your gas mileage to get slightly better as the engine breaks in?

Love the trim package by the way- the front spoiler lip looks good.

Ford's fuel economy is remarkable with the new series modular engines. I went for a drive on the weekend in my 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 (same engine, two more cylinders) which is equipped with a Boss 302 intake manifold and a performance tune. Sticking to the speed limit on a winding back road (lots of radar out that day) I turned in about 28 mpg.

You read my mind Johnny!

Very impressive figures for sure. My 250HP 3.5l V6 is no where near that. Highway I get betweeen 22-27, city I get 18-21. My best is 27.3, worst is 15.5, average is 21.4.

These new engines that are being put out are truly remarkable. I wish the V8s would get updates just as often but it seems that the U.S. auto industry is moving in a more European direction by having smaller engines matted to turbos and superchargers to preserve every ounce of gasoline they can.

Needsducttape....actually, no, I don't, at least not much. I have been a mechanic most of my life, and I tend to chuckle when I hear people talk about how much their mileage improves with age. My experience has been, you got what you got mostly. It might get a BIT better, but.............

Ford has made a real winner with that new V-6 Mustang.

With a 305HP V-6 that gets 30+MPG, who needs a V-8 these days?

I know the 5.0L V-8 is a really awesome engine as well, just sayin'......

OK, I don't like the Chrysler 2.7... but I'm not going to blame the engine for that. My feeling is that front-drive Chryslers of your era (and still including my wife's 2005 PT) suffer from the power-suck of a 41TE automatic transmission bolted to the left of the engine more than from the engine itself.

We make a big deal over modern engine efficiency, and don't get me wrong things like variable valve timing do contribute. But people overlook the transmission too often. The electronic automatic has really matured and stepped up in efficiency as the 2nd and 3rd generation models have appeared. The 41TE was and will always remain the very first one dating back to 1989. Yes, it got upgraded a lot over the years, but it never had a very good ratio spread and always had a lot of parasitic losses. All you have to do is talk to people who own stick vs. automatic PT Cruisers to see what a difference the transmission can make on the same engine in the same car.

You know the eternal BITOG question.

"What oil ya gonna run in it?"

Though I'd be interested in the auto version, which would return about 10% lower gas mileage (right?), this one sounds fantastic. Now I know I want to test drive one, just for kicks.

Edit: SwampDweller, I noticed you're just up the road from me, so you can testify: How's the A/C?

Benzadmiral.....the stick is EPA rated at 29mpg highway, the auto is rated at 31mpg highway. Still scratching my head on that one, same rear gear. My son in law just got a 2011 Mustang V6/auto(same car), but he doesn't watch mileage very much.

The A/C works great, you're in the area, so you know about the heat here right now.

Planning on fairly short(4000mi.) OCI's with 5-20 conventional. Probably dump the FF at about 2000mi.
