I own a 2008 FLHX Street Glide harley Davidson and I am currently running AmsOil 20W50 synthetic motorcycle oil.

I am happy with the oil just the price and availability is harsh.

I am considering the Valvoline 20w-50 4 stroke synthetic. Is this a comparable oil to Amsoil?

I would consider the Mobile 1 but I see you do not recommend it due to it losing the rating of JASO MA

I run the oils in all three holes..Is the Valvoline comparable and would you recommend it or should I stick with Amsoil?

I'd run the Valvoline 20W50 synthetic 4-stroke motorcycle oil if you can find it.
While not comparable, I ran very, very good UOA's using Valvoline in my WRX and would have no problem using Valvoline if I rode a Harley.

If you want to run the Valvoline by all means do it. You can run any 20w50 in the engine, motorcycle specific oils aren't needed in the Harley engine. Rotella 15w40 is great in the primary. Also I run a gear oil in the transmission, 75w140 with good results.
Auto and heavy duty engine oils have friction modifiers that benefit the engine, some people run the 15w40 rotella in the engine and the primary. Rotella 15w40 is jaso certified. Some use 10w40 or atf in the primary also.
I have aslo run mobil 1 15w50 in the engine several times with no problems. Napa 15w50 synthetic is also an option.

You can also use valvoline racing 20w-50 in either the Dino or synthetic. UOA's have been outstanding with this oil. I would, however, recommend a gear oil for the transmission. It's just smoother.

Just completed the 5k on my 13 SE Ultra last night. Went from Amsoil 20w-50 in engine/primary, Amsoil 75w-110 Sever Gear in transmission to Schaeffers Supreme 7000 20w-50 in Engine, 80-90 Gear Lube in transmission and Amsoil 20w-50 in Primary (because I had 38oz left over from 1k service). I can get the Schaeffers for $5 a quart vs AMsoil at $11 a quart (plus shipping and handling) from a local rep in the area.

I misquoted the Amsoil price (forgot discount) and couldn't edit my original post...my last order of Amsoil 20w-50 in a 1 gallon jug (4 quarts)was $36.05 (@$9 a quart), Severe Gear 7w-110 $11.95, shipping $9.10 and tax $5.51.

I can get a case (12 bottles) of the Schaeffers Supreme 7000 20w-50 for $65 out the door...

Someday someone will have to explain to me how Harley stealerships charge $300 and up for a service?

Valvoline VR-1 in the crankcase.

Rotella 15w40 in the primary chaincase. Been using this for more years than I can remember. This oil has a JASO MA rating for wet clutches.

Run what you want in the transmission. Some use gear oil, some use motor oil, and some use the Harley (or other brand) primary chaincase lube. I haven't heard of a Harly transmission failure caused by the lubricant.
