OK my wife got a new car Sept 08 . It has had One oil change in since she got it. The dealer changed it ( FREE ) . when the OMS said it was time. They told us no early oil changes to let the factory fill run it's entire life. I think it was changed out at 6,000 miles. The wife has 11,000 miles on the car now. That puts the last oil change at 5,000 miles ago. She said the Oil Life Monitor system is at 49% . I said [censored] that going to put the car in the 8,000 miles range for a oil change on this dino oil. I'm going to change the oil this time and for now own. If she's pushing 7000-8,000 miles oil changes I was going to pick up a Pure one filter and run PP in it. Any thoughts on this cars long runs with the built in OLM ?? Thanks WD

OLM is very good system. I'd trust it with one thing, don't go too long if you did not drive it.

But since you are putting miles on the car then you are good to go.

Run *ANY* 5w-20 (the conventional oils are mostly a blend with that weight) and you'll be fine.

What type of use is this car seeing? Hwy/City? (just for my personal data as I want to see how the OLM is figuring the percentage)

Take care, Bill

OLM have shown to be pretty accurate. Though I'll admit that I wouldn't be comfortable going 8k miles on conventional oil regardless of what the OLM is saying. Personally I'd get a quality filter and a quality synthetic oil (like what you're doing), I use those and then follow the OLM.

Unless stated otherwise, the OLM is adjusted for conventional oil, so a synthetic should be able to hold up for the full duration even better.

Another alternative would be to use conventional oil, but change it out half way through.

Personally I'd opt for the quality synthetic options just b/c it means less oil changes. I'd probably also do a couple of UOAs just to make sure its holding up well. But that's just me and my opinion

It's getting 90% highway miles on it. Alittle stop and go.... WD

I would not run dino much past 5000 miles oci. A good syut. will serve you well . I use M1 oil and filters and they have performed well for me. PP will do fine as well.

The "OLM" on Honda's are very accurate! 4cly Honda's are very easy on oil and w/ 90% hwy driving i would expect to see up to 10k or 1 year OCI on that car w/ no problems even on a conventional oil in 5w20 grade. As some else has already stated 20wts are made w/ a better base stock. I wouldn't worry about it! When the OLM gets to 15% change the oil and the filter every other OCI.
Joe

on highway engine is getting maximum mileage per engine revolution, and engine is basically loafing along. oil is not getting stressed with frequent cold starts. it is amazing how long oil will actually last. i would not worry, the OLM people even take into account that you might not be able to change it out at 0%, and that you might unavoidably have to go longer. Just to be safe, change it out at 15-20%,

You'd be FINE.

I'm doing 7-8k OCIs wih 5w-30 conventional in a Corolla with about the same hwy usage and it is doing great. The UOAs have had plenty of TBN left when I had them done around 6k.

A LOT of members here worry and spend too much time on what ifs.

The facts are;

1. The OLM is accurate.

2. The OLM was calibrated for conventional oil rated for what the manual states (ie 5w-20 API SM oil)

3. The UOAs that we have seen show that OLM systems are pretty close (they seem to be error on safe side) to prove that they are fine.

With 90% hwy use no worries at all in my book.

Take care, bill

I have no problems trusting the Maintenance Minder on that car, whether you're using conventional or synthetic. UOAs suggest that the R18A1 just doesn't stress oil very much.

The MM on my Civic gives me about 6,000 miles between oil changes. I do around 67/33 city/highway driving, so it's no surprise to see that it recommends shorter OCIs than your wife's freeway driver.

Just changed oil tonight.

2006 Honda Accord 2.4L (I-4) iVTEC --> OLM @ 50% (4000+ miles) with Carquest Red oil filter with Kendall Syth-blend (5w20). Just changed with AAP TG oil filter and NAPA conv. oil (5w20).

50 hwy miles, 5 days a week.

My 2 cents.
