Hi all. So, my mother-in-law needs an oil change and my wifes brother is doing it for her. She has a 2005 Toyota Camry (lives in Florida.) Roughly 125,000 miles on the odometer. She drives about 10 miles a week these days (82 years old.) I was going to do it for her as I was headed down there, but my hernia repair ruptured, so not going.

He called me and said he got a deal at AAP for FRAM Synthetic HM 5W-20 oil and a Carquest premium filter (Blue one, so nice PG filter.) Total out door was about $32. Not bad.

Anyone use this oil regularly? It an Amalie oil. I don't hear about it much on here, but have seen a few mentions of it.

I was just going to have her go to a local mechanic, but the BIL said he would do it.

Seemed like fine oil when used 2-3 years ago.
I'd change it in two years, if all she's driving is 600 miles per year.
Agree. She did about 1,000 miles since last April....

I have been making sure it's changed at least once a year so far. It was done last April with Supertech synthetic. Still a very nice running car and in good shape.

Thanks all for the replys.

It’s a 2005 Camry, which wasn’t even specd for synthetic when it came out. I think you’ll be more than fine. However, I think the grade should be 5w30 based on that year

Most Americans have become auto-maintenance stupid and thus take advantage of those combo sales at places like Advance Auto Parts. If you decide otherwise, then the not-so-smart auto parts shopper needs to find a respectable oil - then a respectable filter at a place like Walmart...... not an easy task for those that have a difficult time just trying to open their vehicle hoods -then another difficult time locating the dipstick.

So for some, letting the auto parts store recommend a oil & filter combo, is a good idea and has become a popular way to shop for oil changes.

What's totally ironic is someone who knows hardly nothing about oils and filters, sometimes ends up finding better oils and filters than a visitor that comes here and gets 42 different suggestions on what oil and filter to buy.

The 30 wt shears down terribly
What's amazing is both the VIIs and fuel dilution shear the oil down from 10 to 7.5 and the engine just keeps humming along, like it's on engine healing steroids.
(engine says after a 1k trip).....Me wants more VII and more fuel........ ummm-ummm good!

Anytime someone has asked me for basic recommendations the answer is usually grab the local auto parts oil/filter bundle or get OEM stuff. I think both of those options are pretty hard to screw up.
