Wife went out this morning and picked up Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 jug for me. I told her to get 5w30 but she said they only had the 5w20 and I guess she asked the guy at the counter and he said the Ford takes 5w20 anyways. Yes it does call for that but the thing is I have 3 QTS of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 left over from the last change on my car. And since her expedition takes 7qts I figured why not. The car has 100,000 miles on it and we live in Maui so 5w30 is fine I'm sure. Should I return the 5w20 or just mix two QTS of 5w30 with the 5w20. Also fram ultra xg2 is the filter she got. Happy she got the rt filter

Normally I bring the ford into the dealer to change the oil because we live in a condo hear on maui. Back in NY I'd do it myself because I had a shop. But now my buddy said I can use his garage so I figured I'd save a few bucks. Plus I'm sure pp and the ultra filter are better then motor craft syn blend and a Purolator filter

I almost told her to get regular Pennzoil conventional because from what everyone says hear its just as good for 5000 oci. Idk I guess its habit to stick with syn

I'll be curious what your oil consumption is like with the Penz. Plat.

mine drank it at the rate of 1qt/2,000 miles. My 5,000 OCI required nearly 9qts of oil!

I've had much lower consumption with other oils, which is why I'm curious how it fairs for you.

I'd mix them since you already have it in hand, but like you, having used both the 5w20 and 5w30, I much prefer the 5w30.

3 valve motors drink oil, throw cam phasers, lose lubrication at the top end, break spark plugs and do other mean things that I'll leave for you guys to find out.

Mixing the two oils shouldn't cause any harm. Fram Ultra is a good filter for the Penz Plat

I'll let ya know. This is the first time using pp in the expedition. Its always been serviced at ford . got the car used when we got to Maui and the service records say its been to Ford for every oil change. Its funny that the book says 5000 mile oci but fords sticker always say 3000. Also I've always picked up a qt of oil to top off between changes. Mobal5k it used the whole qt between changes This last time I topped off with Pennzoil Conventional and it used 1/2 qt.

I did notice that 5w30 did quit the engine down some. So I figured I'd stay with it. So far no leaks. No real usage. I always keep my oil at the full mark. Its never gone below the add line . and I did read about the plug issue and can phasers but so far so good

the first top off with Mobil Super 5000 it was 5w20. The second top off was pyb5w30. Also had ford use motor craft syn blend 5w30 the last oil change. Who knows if it made a big difference but I guess a half qt.

So it used a whole qt to top off the first oil change. And the 2nd oil change it used a half qt. Both at 5000 oci.

There is little reason for syn oils at 5000 mile oil change intervals. Unless the temps get below 0*F.

Well just changed it. 5 QTS of pp5w20. 1.5 QTS of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a half qt Pennzoil Conventional 5w30. Wanted to use it up. Book calls for 5000 mile oci. What do you people think a good oci is for the truck. It does see a lot of stop n go short trips. The oil I drained was really clean at 4000 miles but did smell of fuel somewhat. Also I noticed the motor craft filter that was on it seemed like it was quite different from the ultra I put on it. Not in size different but in the size of the holes and it seemed to have a different anti drain back valve. I did notice the ford filter held a lot of oil in it after I took it off and shook it around a little.

I found that the motor was much quieter on 5w30, used half as much oil and backed It up with an excellent uoa with a 5000 mile oci with trop artic oil.

But it was all highway too.

Now I'm shooting for 10k miles with Castrol edge gold. Just sampled a 10k oci and will send it in.

Hopefully the post office wont lose this one like they dis with my 8600 mile oci ... Grrrr!

But again, my miles are all highway, but with a lot of gravel roads.... So we will see.

With 7qts of oil, 5k oci seems comfortable regardless of use, but thats just my personal opinion.
