I am changing out the clutch in my 2003 VTX 1800 and am also thinking of changing the oil brand. I’ve been seeing quite a few people recommending M1 10/40 racing oil, and others say Rotella T4/6. I’m not happy with the amsoil I was using as I had quite a bit of top end noise(more than usual). And want to use a higher Zinc based oil as well. Any thoughts? I appreciate your constructive feedback

So what oil had the best shifting characteristics and shift quality longevity for you.

And welcome to bitog Bert.

Thanks!! I’m glad I found this group!! I liked Bel Ray oil but it’s hard to find.

What were the next best alternatives. If t4 or t6 worked well then maybe just stick to them. And have you had the engine compression checked and compared to spec or monitored oil consumption. It's at that age and wear now.

Have not checked compression but valves are perfect and it starts/runs like a top dont see a need to do a compression check at this time. Just looking for oil recommendations with a new clutch?

Rotella T4 - meets JASO MA/MA2 specs - been using it for years in all of our cycles! Great oil!
So I live in Mn and our temps range from 35-110, my worry is the colder temps will slow the shifting too severely with the T4?

I ran Amsoil for years in a variety of Goldwings. With the last Goldwing, I switched over to Mobil 4T 10w-40. Cheaper and easier to purchase at more places. I need to change the oil in it in the next few weeks. Will have a UOA done.
