I recieved my oil report back from Blackstone Labratories, and they reported that everything was fine execpt for the high amount of lead in my sample.

Here are the numbers the number before the slash is the test reading and the number after the slash is the universal average.

This is from a 2002 WRX with 85,000 miles, OCI 3000 miles.

Aluminum = 3/3
Chromium = 0/1
Iron = 6/6
Copper = 2/4
Lead = 39/4
Tin = 0/1
Molybedenum = 72/69
Nickel = 0/0
Manganese = 0/1
Silver = 0/0
Titanium = 0/0
Potassium = 0/1
Boron =145/50
Silicon = 8/7
Sodium = 8/8
Calcium =2780/2141
Magnesium = 13/67
Phosphorus = 763/701
Zinc = 873/824
Barium = 0/0

Happy top end, unhappy bottom end (lead bearing overlay I presume). Or in the case of a boxer engine, I guess that would be happy sides and unhappy center.

I have been running Mobil 1 10w40, when I took the sample I switched to Castorol Syntec 10w40 and after this OCI I will send in another sample for analysis to see if things change.

I don't have the money for a new short block, how worried should I be about my bearnings...is this severe wear?...I know that it all depends on my driving style and stress (load) on the engine. For the most part I am usually pretty tame these days on the road. I shift around 3-4k depending on the situation.

Should I avoid high RPM driving altogether, like mountain runs, or would it be okay every once and a while?

As far as driving habits...a little more detail

Since I bought it 6 months ago, the car has been a city car for the past 6 months. I have just recently moved to the country and the car sits for most of the week, until the weekend, when I drive it 1hr (highway) down to the city...where it sits, for most of the weekend. I don't street race, I don't auto-x, I have only taken it on one "balls to the walls" mountain run, however, I am the 4th owner of this car.

I just want to get an idea of what my level of paranoia should be...which will then of course determine my driving habits until I can afford a new short block.

If that was my report I'd have Terry Dyson look at it or test it.. Blackstone gives a SUS. Viscosity, what was it? That will tell the cSt viscosity. Will tell if there was shearing. Flashpoint can tell you about fuel dilution.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I am sorry that I did not provide enough info in my original post, I apprieciate everyones patience.

Here is the rest of the info from the test. Again, tested values are before the slash, and universal averages after the slash

SUS. Viscosity (sustained???) = 69.0 / 66-74
Flashpoint = 395 / >385
Fuel % = Antifreeze % = 0/0.0
Water % = 0.0/0.0
Insolubles % = 0.3/
Who is Terry Dyson, and how would I go about contacting him?

Once again, thanks for the assistance.

Don't sweat over it with just one UOA showing lead like that. As oilyriser said, maybe it's from gas. If it's not from gas, maybe it was a fluke and won't happen again.

Do you have any idea what viscosity the previous owner's used? I'm guessing there was some 5W30 used in this car's past since you're using 40 weight. Hopefully the next uoa will be better, but I wouldn't go too far on the OCI.

It could be a particle streak or bearings going bad (not unusual on hard driven 02/03 WRX's running thin oil). Any mods?

There was a note from the 1st owner in the manual that stated he switched over to Fully Synthetic Mobil 1 10w30 as soon as the engine was broken in and that he maintained the car meticulosly. I don't have any info on the second owner, but he didn't have the car very long (carfax report), and the third owner told me that he used Mobil 1 10w30. I have had the car now for about 10 months and for the first 3 oil changes I was using Mobil 1 10w30, the oil change that I took the sample from was on Synthetic Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40. When I did the oil change I switched over to Castorol Syntec 10w40. I have really enjoyed the way the car feels on the Castorol. I am interested to see what the next anaylsis looks like.

The standard fare.

Larger intercooler, fully catless exhaust, professionally tuned ECU.

I wouldn't sweat BB's over it. Your lead is high - but a trend will indicate a bearing problem, not a single UOA.

The oil vis is 12.7 cSt@100°C, which is barely in SAE 40 land, but this very typical for this oil. I would try another run with the same oil OR an oil of your choice. I would be tempted to try Amsoil 10W-40 (AMO) or Amsoil SAE 30 (ACD).

I think the clue is your ECU mod. Regardless of your next oil choice, your fuel amount may be higher than indicated here. The reason you should see Terry Dyson is because he can give you professional advice (for a low fee!) PLUS his fuel readings are much more accurate.
