I need an oil recommendation for a stock 426 hemi with 55,000 mile on the odometer. Engine appears to be good health, and the car will be used for cruizes and a daily driver (on occassion)street car.99% of miles should be at temperatures above 40+degF. Service manual list 20w40, but I can only find this weight at marine supply stores for 4 stroke outboards, and although the viscoisty is correct, I don't know if this marine oil is acceptable.

Thanks for helpful input!

I would say 15w-40 dino or 10w-40 or 15w-40 syn oil. I believe that the 20w-40 weight will be hard to find and it is not needed.

Old spec. 0,5,10,15w-40 is pretty much the norm now.

I use 10w-40 synthetic in my 1970 Olds 442/W30. At 9 miles per gallon I just drive it to cruise-ins and back home.

40ford

My best friend in high school had a dark blue one with a 440 four barrel and an automatic. Loved the fold down bucket seats in the back.

That's a solid-lifter engine. I would try Brad Penn Penn Grade 1 Semi-Synthetic 10w-30 or straight 40 wt. It's also called The Green Oil.

Back when I used a flat tappet cam I used Rotella 15W40 oil. Chevron Delo seems to be another popular option with the flat tappet crowd. The price is good too at $15 a gallon. Add a WIX filter and Filtermag on the side and you will have all the protection you need for that flat tappet cam.

Mobile 1 15W-50. It has 1200 ppm of zddp, so you wont wipe that flat tappet cam lobe. If you choose to use an oil with lower zddp content make sure to add some zddp plus.

I think the marine oil would work just great!

But, I would (in your area, and your application) use the following oil:

Amsoil ARO 20w-50 oil.

Your engine will love it. The 426 Hemi is a one-of-a-kind engine and deserves the best!

Chris71 had it right: use the Brad Penn 20w-50. It's the latest iteration of the old Kendall GT-1 formula, and has what that hemi valvetrain needs.

Agreed. Penn-Grade 1 20w50 is the way to go for that engine.

Thanks for the kudos, guys. I can't stress enough how proper 40 wt. or 20w-50 Brad Penn Penn Grade 1 would be for a solid cam Hemi. 1,500 ppm of zinc and 1,410 ppm of phosphorous. That's ideal for any solid cam!

I just started using Brad Penn 1 10/30 racing oil in my Hemi Challenger & it seems to work great. I may mix one quart of 20/50 with the 30 to up the viscosity a little.

I think another great choice would be Valvoline VR1 Racing oil.
Both are high in Zinc & Phosphorus.
