10 Years Of BITOG

Been on here for 18+ years-- real old memories:
1. Ad pack trumped whether or not an oil was synthetic. PYB loved by all.
2. The guy who "invented" the GM OLM was on here for a month or so, got in a fight with Amsoil people and left in a huff. He was actually knowledgable.
3. The "original Bob" had an interesting position paper stating that high quality oil filters were too restrictive, a position of every HVAC repair person I run into-- use cheap fiberglas air filters or your system will plug up.
4. The OCD is to be avoided at all costs. We later found out the rumor was started by someone canned by Fram. Think he was on the site too before getting mad and leaving.
5. Supertech (maybe it was still Tech 2000 back then) was made in Louisiana and was "really" Quaker State (PZ-QS, pre-Shell)

The very first car forum I ever joined was 3si.org (Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth forum),and they were talking about lifter tick or something, and BITOG was linked by someone there, and that's how I found it and joined (maybe 2003 or so?).

One of the old dilemmas I remember here was when the red cap Mobil 1 15W50 disappeared, then to be replaced by the 15W50 silver cap (and in between as the 15W50 gold cap Extended Performance). That was my go-to oil for many years.

Been on here for 10 as well! 10 interesting months that is....

Very entertaining and informative. I rate this site a “10”.

That's been debunked many times, as some of the most highly efficient oil filters these days also the best flowing (meaning they have less delta-p with flow). The air filter in a furnace analogy isn't a good one to oil filters, as a furnace doesn't have a positive displacement pump.

There are some misconceptions that will never die. ;)

Huh, says I'm coming up on 12 years, but I wasn't that active for several years.

Learned quite a bit, yet not enough. Some of the better things I've learned were not automotive. Finding a site that has diverse opinions, wide range of knowledge on various subjects, avoids being an echo chamber yet reins in attacks and psuedo-knowledge... not many places like this.

Hovering over your avatar shows a join date of 12/30/06. Still quite a while, coming up on 14 years.

Good rejoinder to people who want you to get advice on non-automotive matters elsewhere. A few years ago an optometrist told me I had high pressures and referred me to an ophthalmologist. Turns out the original test was faulty, but once you get referred to a specialist in old age you can never get away. Anyway, while waiting the couple of months for my appointment I asked some glaucoma questions of this group and enrolled in a glaucoma board. The answers I got here were non-detailed and quite helpful. "I have it and it's easily controlled." "My uncle had it".... The specialized board was full of people who were as obsessed with eye disease as we are with oil. I received daily email digests of dozens of posts. It was like being dropped into the middle of a buffet when all you wanted was five Buffalo wings. Same things with investing, computers and any one of a number of side issues covered by BITOG.

Almost 8 years for me. I've really enjoyed this forum, so many others just seem so dumb, like if you shook the heads of the members on other forums you could hear them rattle.

I also remember when Pennzoil Platinum was THEE OIL to use here on BITOG.
Was that before the Pennzoil Ultra craze? I remember in 2013 everyone going crazy over Pennzoil Ultra (before the natural gas stuff). Then it went on clearance at Auto Zone and everyone including myself stocked up big time.

Oh yeah it was way before Pennzoil Ultra was even made. I never even knew Pennzoil made synthetic oil till the Platinum bug hit BITOG. Syntec and Mobil 1 were the only synthetics I was aware of,and everyone was going UOA crazy here with Platinum. PYB was the bees knees here when I first joined before the Platinum craze.

It's been 15 years for me, in fact I think it was this month, after Hurricane Katrina. Auto-Rx was the big thing, and the quarts of 5W-30 -- the then-current certification, yet! -- that you could get at Dollar Tree.
