0w30 Quartz better for noisy tappets?

Not too sure since the bonnet was closed and there is sound dampening material, but sounds pretty ok to me for a cold engine.
Of course I don't have comparisons, my Barchetta sounds differently even when cold, and the Colt too, with exhaust noise that is masking some eventual light chatters

This morning.

cold start

At about 35 seconds it becomes really chattery like more than 1 tappet starts sticking.

Gave it a good thrashing around today. Again once warmed up no ticking.
The 16v engine pulls really nicely above 3500 rpm

Might well give Forte top end a go. Then in 6 months another oil change

good news, managed to change peugeot oil sunday afternoon between rain showers.
bad news engine still sounds the same!!!!?.
will do a video this weekend of the peugeot, for you to listen to brit 33.
our car sounds like yours, almost could be a diesel!.
i have never tried an engine additive before, but worth a try.there is plenty on the market,so i will check the reviews etc.
once oil temp up to normal the noise totally disappears,so a top end investigation is not going to happen at the moment, but a dont mind trying different oils and additives to see if there is any improvement.

yes curious to hear yours.
At different temps.

I will probably try forte top end. Then next maybe Liqui Moly tappet additive. The only 2 I trust.
My garage swears by Forte.

Then in a year if the same or worse will swap the tappets and maybe the cams if worn.
We do like this car. (except for the wipers!!)

It is nice and responsive and revs great with the 16 valves!

That's weird how it actually makes more noise after ~35s!
Usually it quiets down after a few seconds.

Is there an adjustment or something other than tappets that can be done? Have you checked all parts, nothing loose that can rattle? Like exhaust manifold heat shield? Sparks plugs and coils are all correctly torqued (I had once a spark plug who had unscrewed itself, made weird things)?

No adjustments.
I will check the heat shield this weekend. There is a bolt missing, that will be replaced.
I will check the plugs again.

Well this morning I made 3 recordings and the noise had gone!! I did drive the car very hard yesterday revving it high before changing gears.
Stuck tappets? So more spirited driving is required.

But not betting it has gone completely. Probably come back again today. I'll let you know.

I'm suspecting the previous driver never revved the thing above 1500 rpm!! My old alfa was like that, always needed an Italian tune up after the misses had it for a week but that was a different beast altogether.

Spoke too soon... leaving work... ticking but not too much.
Not evident first thing this morning but then came back a little before setting off home from work!
scratch head!

5 days use with 0w40 oil,but still no improvement.
will be interested in brits 33 results with forte top end treatment, checked out reviews and all seem positive for this product.
maybe your car with only 32000 miles, had a longtime previous owner, who made all short journeys
causing lifters to sludge/gum up?.
hopefully the forte product can help if this is the case.

I have just put the Forte top end in this evening. Very thick stuff with a few glittery specs in it. Must be the cleaning additives.
I don't expect miracles but worth a try before I contemplate changing the tappets.
The noise is so inconsistent which is fustrating. Occasional mornings starting cold with little sound and then others so chattery. Very strange. French engines!!
But I do like the engine while driving very much.
Responsive and fun to drive when giving it higher revs.

Yes I do expect this engine to have been used for a lot of short journeys. Wish I had tested it 2 times before buying it.

I believe it could be a design flaw and so many of these engines are chattery.
Mechanically when the engine is cold maybe the there is too much clearance between the cam lobes and valve stems as the hydraulic tappets aren't able to pump up and extend enough to create a zero lash. Almost like the old pushrod engines with solid tappets. Once the parts have expanded then the tappets can work properly. (3-4 mms of travel I understand they have in general)
Maybe the INA aftermarket tappets can extend a bit further and ensure there is zero lash. The alfa romeo tappets didn't last in my old car.

First tests very good with the Forte Top End.

I put it in a hot engine Friday Night.

On Sunday we did a 1 hour round trip out.
Monday when started I didn't hear anything. Did 4 stop start trips around town and was quiet all day.

Most likely too soon to say anything. I'll report next time.

received purlux l358a filter? appears to be same size as 1109ck.
i took a video of the peugeot, but unsure on how to down load it to this site.
forte top end sounds positive at the moment, good luck.
i have ordered 10w/40 oil to try and see if any improvement my peugeot noise,if one or more lifters are leaking down, then maybe thicker oil might help retain oil in the lifters?.

I used it for some time (3 OC in my Barchetta), it cleaned a bit (not much) and made the variator rattle a lot (not sure if phase cam variator or tappets when variator activates since it uses a different cam profile. Still trying to solve the problem). Tried various oils in different weight and pretty much everything was better then HX7 for my problem (note the "gasoline" version was better than "diesel").

I also used the diesel version in my diesel for a few years, better than Elf Competition 10W40 I used previously, but still it sheared quickly and made the engine noisy. Shell Rimula R6M did better in my car, so does (surprisingly) Selenia Turbo diesel.

Apart from some disappointment in my cars (but the Barchetta has a specific problem and the Marea seem to be hard on oil), this oil carries a lot of approvals (MB 229.3 if I'm not wrong, "diesel" HX7), so it should be at least ok!

if you have a onedrive account you can easily share a link here to your video.
You can sign up for a windows onedrive easily. Upload the video and then share a 'view only' link here.

L398A seems to be the same filter but the 1109CK has Peugeot imprinted on the plastic casing and also on the box. Paper appeared to be a little better quality too.
I ordered both to compare.

Sounds good

Considering how clean the oil is in this Peugeot engine now after the flushes (I can't even see the level on the dipstick)

I may consider doing the same flushes on my skoda. Just changed the oil and it's pretty black already.
