0W-20: Which one from among these three choices:

Didn't you get the 2 year/25K free maintenance package?

I was kind of surprised to see that I'm getting a 5K OCI so that tells me that I have dino FF. The dealership said they use Castrol syn blend. But for the price (free!) I'm not arguing.

My current plan when the free maintenance is gone is to use either Mobil 1 or Edge 0W-20. I use Edge in my other vehicles and have been very happy with it.

Great truck! (even if it does have a turning radius of Rhode Island)

They did offer the 2 year/25K free maintenance package. But me being Obsessive compulsive, plus having worked in a shop eons ago and seeing what goes on beyond the shop doors, I just can't bring myself to let someone else change the oil. Is there any cure for this disease, short of prescription meds :-)

As far as I know, factory fill is 0W-20. The maintenance guide indicates 5K mile oil change intervals, with no differentiation for normal/severe service.

I heard someone else on one of the forums say the interval was 5K with regular oil, and 10K with synthetic. The manual says *nothing* about this; it just specifies 5K oil changes only. Are you aware of anywhere else Toyota is specifying 10K intervals for the 5.7L V8?

I've used two of the three oils you mentioned, Amsoil and Mobil 1. I'm now using Edge 0W20 and based on my observations, it is the best of the bunch. I haven't tried RL but since I'm so pleased with Edge there really isn't a need. Edge 0W20 also meets the Honda and Toyota specs. AAP oil change specials make it affordable along with a top quality filter. JMO

Now if you have your heart set on one of the three you mentioned above I'd go with the Mobil 1 0W20.

Toyota will change your oil for free every 5,000 miles (dino) or 10,000 miles (synthetic) the first 2 years.

I have a new 2011 Land Cruiser with the Japanese version of your engine.

I'm planning to use 0W-20 Mobil 1 at 5,000 miles and let Toyota use their 0W-20 (now Mobil) when they change it at 10,000 miles.

Being the Pennzoil fan that I am, I may just use 5W-20 Ultra on my changes.

I was the one that was guessing that it was dino FF since my owners manual states 5K OCIs and the dealership reinforces that. I can't imagine Toyota putting in a quality synthetic oil and requiring such a short OCI.

It must be my dealer then. Titus-Will Toyota didn't give me the option of a synthetic oil or 10K OCI.

I have 1K on my truck now and was thinking of doing an initial change at 2K with Mobil 0W-20. I can't seem to find Edge 0W-20 here in Washington State. At 5K, I'll let the dealer do another one.

My dealership sells Toyota 0W20 for $5.50 per quart. It's considered a very good oil and that price is actually a little lower than M1 0W20. You might want to check to see what your dealer will charge. If you use their oil (and possibly their filter), they would have a very difficult time disputing a warranty claim.

A 2011 should be covered under the Toyota care maintenance pkg. So, wouldn't your first five oil services be covered?

It's odd that the 5.7 requires 5k intervals since most Toyota vehicles using 0w-20 are at 10k intervals.

I had the same problem here in NY. AAP carries it now in some of their locations. If you can find Edge you might be able to have your dealer bring it in. I'm glad I made the switch, there was a noticeable difference in my 08 Jeep changing over to it. If they can't get it for you, their 5W20 from what I've heard is very good too, there's always M1 0W20 as well.

Does Wal Mart even stock 5qt jugs of M1 0w-20 AFE? Every single one I go to only has 5qt jugs of 0w-30 in the AFE flavor.

Of the three, I would go with Mobil 1 for licensing reasons already mentioned. Otherwise Toyota OEM (which is not API licensed, but obviously for Toyotas) It has a lot--like 800ppm--of moly in it.

Not correct. From Toyota's website:

Genuine Toyota 0W-20 synthetic motor oil meets and surpasses all new Toyota model specifications, and is certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

It does not require 5K synthetic oil changes. The link friendly jacek placed shows 10K and it comes with 0W20 as factory fill.

What I find odd is that the 3.5l V-6 in the RAV4 still requires 5W30 at six month/5K intervals if dino or synth is used.

WM does not have M1 0-20 in the jug. However I buy it at either AZ or AAP when they have the M1 oil and M1 filter sale.( $30) They put that sale on 3-4 times a year and that'e when I buy it.

Also, "Mobile 1 outperforms all conventional motor oils". Is that a fair statement?

No matter, I think any of the oils are exceptional. (I'm not trying to dog Mobile, just curious). I used mobile in my Silverado.

Johnny's post states it because I copied and pasted direct from the Mobil 1 webpage. It is a quote, I did not make it up.

"Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy meets or exceeds the industry's toughest standards in its class and outperforms all conventional motor oils. It offers exceptional performance under all operating conditions, pours at temperatures as low as -53°F (-47°C) and protects at oil temperatures as high as 400°F (205°C)."
