are there any owners of the AVEO H.B.? Or do you know of anyone that owns one ? There's a $2,000 rebate at the moment and thinking of getting the 5 speed . Should be able to get it for less than $9,000 . Would like to know the mileage and the reliability of those who own the AVEO . Last , likely to change out gear oil to synthetic ( REDLINE or AMSOIL ) , power steering fluid to syn ( AMSOIL A.T.F. or MOBIL 1 A.T.F. ) , and the brake / clutch fluid to syn ( AMSOIL Dot 4 or VALVOLINE Dot 4 ( no silicon )) . THANKS

Honestly, I haven't heard much good about them. They really don't get the mileage one expects for how tiny they are. Resale value, a point of debate here if that really matters is abysmal. It's a Daewoo and they sold amazingly well here.

The Aveo only gets 24 city with the 5-speed per fueleconomy.gov That is crazy for a car that is only 103 hp. My 100 horsepower Saturn gets about 11-12 mpg better in the city than the Aveo.. Why??

I say bring back the Geo Metro!

I see lots of old Metros still on the road with 200K on them.

If you want 45-47 miles per gallon on the highway, look for a used low mileage Civic HX.

I bought my son a 2003 (5 speed) and we went on a 700 mile trip to visit a college campus and with the A/C always on we averaged 46 MPG.

These cars are dirt cheap and are extremely reliable.

You would be 10 times better off to spend the same money on a reliable used Honda such as the type mentioned above or a Toyota. The Aveo is a Daewoo Kalos. Daewoo has one of the worst reputations for U.S. available cars. Why buy a future headache or car that you will be dying to get rid of in a few years? Please feel free to research Daewoos to find out for yourself.

Get a used car, trust me. You'll be ahead.

A used Honda Civic or Ford Focus. Better mileage, better reliability, and much more fun to drive.

Just came from Korea last week and saw lots of Daewoos. Just get a Cobalt - a better car, better mileage.

It's rated, City 24/hwy 34 (1.6L engine/5-speed manual trans)

Does seem low.

About the same as a Pontiac Vibe, which has much more interior room. Doesn't ad up.

With MPG numbers like that, the Aveo is basically rendered utterly useless. It has no niche as it is very small and not that great on gas.

I think the Aveo [censored] me off because GM took the easy way out on the vehicle. With a different set up and how light the car is, surely it could easily get low 30's city. Instead, GM chose to just slap their logo on an inferior product. No wonder some of the imports have been eating their lunch.

The Aveo has a 1.6L. A mid 90's Nissan Sentra also had a 1.6 and could easily get low 30's/40 highway. Doesn't add up to me.

My landlords have one and like it, they commute back and forth to Maine and they say it does pretty good.

Daewoo sold poorly because of corrupt management that bankrupted the company. The Daewoo car plant is now owned by GM and is doing very well on an international basis.

Their cars weren't that bad, and have gotten better. They tend to get better MPG than the EPA ratings, but still not spectacular. Resale value is more a function of public perception than actual reliability or durabiliity, and is not a big deal unless you trade the cars in frequently. I own a GM/Daewoo-made Suzuki Forenza Wagon. The car is fine. It's comfortable, quiet, and a good hauler . . . but the Suzuki dealer network is way too sparse. I wish it were supported by Chevy.

That being said . . . I probably would still stay away from buying another Korean car. There are too many good ones made in the USA. I'd like to stimulate our own economy for a change.

Been lurking for a long time and actually joined to contribute to this thread. I have recently purchased a 2008 Aveo LS sedan and could not be happier with it. On my last tank I averaged 38.09 miles per gallon and that was mixed city/country/highway driving with an automatic transmision. If I made an effort I could easily obtain the 40-42 range. I looked at the Fit, Yaris, Versa, Sentra, Civic, Focus, Accent, Elantra, Cobalt, Corolla and Malibu. Easiest decision I ever made was to pay $11000 out the door for a NEW car with auto and A/C that more than doubles the EPA rating of the next closest vehicle I own. If you are on the fence, save yourself three to five grand and enjoy the Aveo for what it is... a VERY fuel efficient commuter.

I was disapointed with the economy of a rental aveo that I had for a long distance drive. Glad to hear that 40 is doable.

I'm not sure where everyone is finding these cheap used Hondas and Toyotas. I'm glad that JHZR2 mentioned this on the Jetta thread too - there's not a worse automotive value out there than a used Honda or Toyota.

If you buy the Aveo new for $9k now and sell it for $4500 in three years/36k miles when the warranty expires, you'll have lost $1500/year on it. Not too bad for a car with a warranty and zero maintenance for the whole time you own it. Keep it a year longer and you're even better off.

For $9k you're looking at a 5 or 6 year old Civic with 75k+ miles on it. Odds of this car requiring something major in the next 3 years are not in your favor: struts, brakes, timing belt, CV, AC, tires. You may be able to sell it for $4500 three years from now, but you will have to put money into it (and walk) at some point in the interim.

Finally, consider the benefits to financing a new car, and from a financial perspective, the Aveo's your best bet.

It's not cool, and it's not as good a car as a Civic, but the Aveo will cost less and provide fewer headaches than a used Honda/Toyota.

Korean cars in general aren't as efficient as Japanese cars, but do take into consideration that EPA estimates for all cars were revised downwards starting in 2008.

I'll take a new Hyundai/Kia over an Aveo any day, lol.
