'07 Tacoma 4x4 V6 oil/oci recommendation

Hello all,

I recently purchased an 07 Toyota Tacoma Doublecab 4x4 with the 4L V6 and auto transmission. I plan on keeping this vehicle for 12-15 years. And would appreciate any advice anyone can give. I was researching which oil to use and oil change interval and discovered this site and after reading for hours and hour I'm now suffering from paralysis from analysis froam all of the information here.

My main concern is that this will be my daily driver and my commute to work is 2.5 miles one way. Most days of the week the 2 2.5 mile trips might be all it is driven. On the weekends it will be driven a little more but will still be a relatively low mileage vehicle, probably 7000-8000 miles a year(a 5 mile total commute really lowers the total). Other driving conditions will include:

Heavy traffic in hot temps with the A/c on high.

When I can get away it will be driven in off road in either dusty or muddy conditions.

Random trips of close to 1000mi in one day at high speeds on the interstate.

I live in Baton Rouge LA so heat and humidity are more concern than extreme cold.

Cost isn't really an issue but I would like to stick with an easily available brand, I have previously used Mobile1.Any advice on what oil and OCI to prevent sludge etc. from the extereme short trips? Any other tips on maintainance is also appreciated.

I'd go with the new Halovine 5w-30 DS for $12 a 5qt jug at your local Wal-mart and change it every 6 months required by Toyota.

You'll have a EASY 12-15 years with that truck. My 1982 SR5 Toyota with 2.4 engine just hit 250k miles and is still going like new.. (wish I could say the same about the body.. esp the bed

I agree with Bill. I'd use the new Havoline. teven has 420,000 on his and has used nothing but Havoline conventional. I'd consider a 5w-20 also for short trips.
 
So a conventional oil will hold up for 6 months with the short trips? That was my primary concern. I've used Havoline in the past when I've had longer commutes and never had any problems.

Also how long would ya'll run the factory fill? I only have 340 miles so far and I was thinking 3 months/ 3000 miles for the first change or should I go 1500 miles?

FWIW, I would follow the severe service schedule (time wise). Isn't Super Tech Full syn in a 5W30 fairly decent, and cheap?

Heck, with a 2.5 mile one way trip, I'd ride a bicycle and do 200 mile OCI's on the chain lube!

I would love to bike but have too much #@$%! to bring back and forth. My previous vehicle was even more overkill, a Civic hybrid. With my short commute my wife sold her Corolla and bought me the Tacoma as an early Fathers day present and is taking the Civic since she drives further. I guess I should be out shopping for her Mother's day gift instead of agonizing over which oil huh.

I have an 05 Tacoma with the same engine. First thing is, I believe but could be wrong but Toyota changed the oil spec from 5W-30 to 0W-20 or 5W-20 in the same engine that has no mechanical changes as far as I can tell.

If so, this is just another reason why I feel that auto manufactures are going to lighter oils for the exclusive purpose of increasing overall fleet MPG to meet govt. regs. and not because they are the best bet for your vehicle.
 
I just bought a Tacoma V-6, Prerunner with off road pkg and 6speed manual. I changed my oil out at 600mi and used Mobil 1 5w30 T&SUV and a Toyota oil filter. I will use a 5k OCI after this. I would of used Pennzoil synthetic but my local Wally World was out.

My owner's manual specs 5w30. It also says if that is not available, you could use 10w30.

As far as the rear Differential and Transmission, I will change out the OEM stuff and change to Redline 75-90NS in the Transmission and Redline 75-90 in the Differential. I like Redline only because I can get it for a decent price locally, and I don't have to add any friction modifier for the limited slip Differential.
 
I heard Mobil works well in Toyotas. For me, no diff between Mobil and PP for my Honda besides fattening the cats of 'Big Oil' Exxon. I would try PP because Shell has better rep then EM pure and simple but now their oil is better or just as good but priced so sweetly..it's slowly but methodically turning into a beast in my SOHC 3.0 V6. But I also like dino oil but do not know about truck engines and their rigors and what oils would last good in truck engines..no clue. I know, MC depleted real bad after about 4500 miles and trucks take way more pounding then my SHOC 3.0 presumably. I would go synthetic for sure in a truck tho but that's just me..

1. Any oil works well in Toyotas. Best UOA OVER Mobil in my Toyota has been with Castrol. In fact, Pennzoil conventional, Castrol Syntec blend, GTX and Mobils own drive clean did better than Mobil 1.

2. Did you do a UOA with your MC? Without a UOA (data) your saying that MC went "bad" in 4500 miles in a Honda is going to be put in the trash can.

MC is an excellent oil and there is no way that it went bad in that short of a time.

Please tell us how it went "bad"...
