Here are the results of the second UOA from my 2004 Mazda 6i. No track time during this interval

but still plenty of my usual, spirited driving

.

2004 Mazda 6i, 2.3 ltr 16v, auto trans
11,233 miles on engine, 4,990 miles on sample
4.5 qt. sump, zero make up oil
Havoline 5w-20 SL, GF3
OE Mazda Cartridge filter
Analysis performed by Blackstone Labs

this sample / 1st UOA / univers avgs
(first UOA was 3,243 mile interval)

aluminum 3/3/4
chromium 1/1/1
iron 8/8/12
copper 3/5/8
lead 1/1/1
moly 165/146/75
tin 0/0/0
nickel 0/0/0
manganese 1/1/1
silver 0/0/0
titaniun 0/0/0
potassium 0/0/0
boron 32/49/77
silicon 7/9/10
sodium 2/2/5
calcium 2073/1920/2568
magnesium 27/29/67
phosphorus 741/702/752
zinc 860/843/888
barium 0/0/0

this sample/1st uoa
sus vis @210 51.9/50.8
flashpoint 395f/385f
fuel anti-freeze 0/0
water 0/0
insols 0.4/0.2
TBN = 2.4/3.6

Numbers looking good to me. Once again I'm happy with the performance of this inexpensive, 5w-20 Havoline dino. It seems to do well in this engine and under my conditions/driving habits. I must say I'm especially impressed with how well the TBN held up after almost 5,000 miles. Vis remained a solid 20w

. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new GF4 spec version does. I still have one oil change to go with the SL-GF3 before I start on the fresh case of GF4 Havoline.

Comments welcome and appreciated.

Obviously there must be some mistake. Surely your engine is about to melt into lump of smoldering aluminum being fed such thin dino.

Seriously though, very nice report. Based upon this oil's performance in it's 30 wt incarnations, I used it for the first several changes in my G35. I used the GF-4 version of the 5w-30 in the last pre-GC run. If this oil performs like this in other engines, I'd have to admit that the usual syns would be hard to justify, especially in the 3-5k mile range. Thanks for posting this fine result.

Nice results. Intersting how similar the wear metals are, suggesting this oil in this particular vehicle holds up just as well at 5K as it did at 3.2K miles. Not bad for a $1/qt oil. I have been very happy with the UOA's that the 30 wt Havolines have produced in my rides.

Those results are real impressive especially when you consider that the engine has only 11,000 miles on it

. And as far as Mikep's "spirited driving style", I can personally testify to that

. Obviously this engine and the Havoline 5W-20 are a great match. I forgot, did you do a couple of quick/early oil changes to "clean" out the breakin crud? After seeing results like these it really doesn't make sense to use a synthetic unless you're going to real extended drain intervals.

Yes I did a couple of early, short interval changes. I've been told by some that it helps and by others that it makes no difference at all. Still, it's something I've always done with every new vehicle and if for no other reason than just being habit, I guess I'll continue with the practice.

Oh, by the way....regarding my driving style; could that explain the sort of clamshell greyish/white skin color you had when you drove with me to look at that Mustang?

I thought it was a sugar reaction from the Dunkin Donuts vanilla creme filled lead weight.

ePolk...I couldn't agree more. If someone is going to stick to 5,000 mile or shorter OCIs, I really don't see the justification for 3-4 dollar/qt. synths (under normal conditions that is). I'm having a hard time justifying the fact that I began using LC with this last fill.

Hard to imagine it getting any better....perhaps the LC will keep internals much cleaner than Havoline dino alone would.
