Your right, the WIX #51372 for Ford modulars has the bypass in the rear. Motorcraft is the only filter I've found with an "up front" bypass valve for that application.

It doesen't. It reduces lateral pleat flex, not fore and aft.

I'm pretty sure the C-Series Caterpillar engine use a typical flow oiling system/filter. I think it's more of a pleat flexing situation.
