So why are cartridge style filters more expensive?

The most minimalist oil filter yet: This 2013 Prius oil filter --- click here for picture --- has no end caps? First I've seen in a cartridge like that. I use cartridges in my GM and BMW, all have end caps. Kind of nice, less waste. Should be cheaper. Surely there can't be royalty/licensing on...

Why designers allow mixed lubrication regimes

shannow obviously didn't read the paper. His title here "Why designers allow mixed lubrication regimes" is misleading at best. The paper is not a design paper at all. Its theorists at a university investigating how to model mixed-boundary lubrication in journal bearings, a simulation modelling...

More uniform molecules = less friction

I've never seen any real evidence to say synthetics have less friction or even have less wear than conventional dino. Lots of evidence does say synthetics are more chemically stable, longer-lasting, leaves less deposits. Slipperiness (less friction) has more to do with viscosity and friction...

What's the first thing you noticed w/ synthetic ?

I don't think the differences between conventional and synthetic are anything you can see on the outside of the engine, or hear, or smell, or sense in any way. In fact, the only reason in my mind to use a synthetic is to minimize ring deposits and get longer oil change intervals to save time.

More uniform molecules = less friction

The picture is silly, just marketing junk. ... Since molecules are on the order of a tenth of a nanometer, too tiny to matter if they are all diff sizes. I think they were trying to convey the more closely controlled, intentional design parameters met with synthetics, thats all.

Which full synthetic acts like MS5K ?

I like Kendall synthetic, loved their website's taxi test teardown video. However, if you're like me, if you can't get it at Walmart, then I'm not buying. Ashamed to be a slave to Walmart, but you can't beat the prices on their 5 quart jugs of quality synthetics, multiple brands..... Based on...
