I need to change my oil, but I can't make up my mind which oil to go with. I am extremely happy with the way MS5K keeps my engine whisper quiet; especially at high RPMs. However, I want to switch to a full synthetic and change it once a year. I wish I could find a full synthetic that will mimic the characteristics of MS5K exactly. Any suggestions are welcome.

Your answer is a little bit on the difficult side, but I have quite a bit of experience with MS5K. I think it is an outstanding oil, but here in Mexico it has some regional drawbacks that Mobil has overlooked, in spite of doing a huge amount of testing an engine teardowns after use, including widespread fleet testing with Mexico City's largest taxi cooperative. I used it MS5K for my customer's oil changes almost exclusively for 3 years. My only complaint about it other than being way over priced [wholesale 5w-20 & 5w-30 $4.73 a quart; 15w-40 & 20w-50 $4.50 a liter] is that it seems to have a consumption rate quite a bit higher than SOPUS's products. I have since switched to Quaker State and Pennzoil and just keep a little bit of MS5K and M1 on hand for customers that ask for it by name.

At the moment in 8 of my family's cars I am using QSUD, with great results. [$5.12 a liter, just slightly more expensive than MS5K. I use it in a few of my customers cars as well, maybe 1 or 2 oil changes per month.

Cardenio - thanks for your reply. In your experience, would you say QSUD behaves similarly to MS5K ?

maximus - that would be the logical conclusion, but Mobil 1 is not known for keeping engines quiet.

I can definitely attest to Mobil 1 making cars louder.. Our Kia Forte sounds like a sewing machine with Pennzoil Platinum, and much much worse with Mobil 1, granted I doubt it was hurting a thing.

I have heard many reports of QSUD being quiet, and it is probably next on my list to try.

What else have you tried that was louder in your car? Maybe we can narrow down which specific additives are the most beneficial and find a similar synthetic.

Although, I'm sure it's not that easy either. Similar to actionstan above, I recently switched from M1 0W20 AFE to QSUD based on the FRN rebates and supposedly lower viscosity at low temperatures, and I swear my car sounds smoother and quieter. Might be psychological though.

Kendall GT1 full synthetic? Like your MS5k it has Ti additive. There's a petroleum supplier where you can order by the case, can't remember the name, but I'm sure someone can post it up here soon.

I've never had noise issues with mobil 1, both normal and hm flavors, in fact, the high mileage is just about the quietest oil I've used.

I like Kendall synthetic, loved their website's taxi test teardown video. However, if you're like me, if you can't get it at Walmart, then I'm not buying. Ashamed to be a slave to Walmart, but you can't beat the prices on their 5 quart jugs of quality synthetics, multiple brands..... Based on that, get a 5-quart jug of Castrol Edge Extended (gold bottles/jugs) http://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-Edge-Extended-Performance-5W30-Motor-Oil-5-qt/34039136 which is a titanium-addtive one-year oil.

Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 is as quiet in my G as anything else I've ever tried. You talk the thick oil game. Are you willing to play it?

Isn't that expensive? ~5.67 per quart.

Aren't Mobil 1 & EP/PP & PU cheaper or same with better properties on pqia website?

Would be about the same cost as running the MS5K twice a year. Less labor, and one filter. Stepping up to a filter that will run 10k will probably offset most filter savings. IIRC, ordering two cases at a time is the sweet spot for shipping from PSC.

Yep, you already received suggestions for the two most applicable oils that contain the same Titanium that MS5K does - Kendall Full Syn and Castrol Extended Performance.

Now it's just a matter of choosing mail order or Walmart. It's a shame that Kendall can't get their full syn oils into a retail chain.

I personally have had the best results for quiet engines with Max Life believe it or not, and that is on two different vehicles, one being a 98 Suburban and the other being 12 Jeep GC. It is quieter than even PU to me, I have plenty of PU and once gone I am going back to ML in the 98.

Okay guys, I went and got me 6 quarts of SuperTech full synthetic. I'll let y'all know how it does.

The bottom of the bottle says L E E inside a giant Q with the number M4462 below it.
