Zoysia plugs

I tried zoysia plugs from a local turf farm. Never took off. I have heard shipping on zoysia plugs advertised in newspapers is really expensive, since the stuff is shipped wet and is HEAVY. A co worker ordered some plugs from a newspaper ad, and the freight was so high he refused the shipment.

If you use Zoysia in upstate New York, your lawn will be brown for most of the year because it goes dormant when the weather cools and it greens up late. It's a Southern turf. Why not go with some sod that's good for your area?

What are you trying to accomplish?
New lawn or a renewal of an existing one?
Either way, a mix of annual and perennial rye seed along with an application of lime and nitrogen would likely yield good results.
Fescue would also work well.
With an existing lawn, just overseed the bad spots and they'll likely be fine.
Do this while the weather is still cool and there's still plenty of natural irrigation from the spring rains.

I make my money maintaining lawns (everything except mowing them), and was laughing at the idea that there's a new spark plug named after grass, and a Slovenian guy.

Worked well @ parents' home in high traffic areas...but they're in VA. Took a few years.

Zoysia and upstate NY it's not going to work. Pick a good north east seed mix and do it in the middle of August. If you seed now your going to battle weeds. If your lawn is in bad shape kill it end of July and do a full renovation.

Kind of cold for them in upstate NY.
We had a Zoysia lawn down on Long Island, that was fine.

Now here in SC last summer I bought a lot of Zoysia plugs, I was very impressed with the place, shipped to my house, REALLY nice sized plugs, I dont know of one failure in planting the plugs.

Anyway, I think you should stick to Bluegrass, Zoysia is really a Southern Grass but is you want to try it, I HIGHLY recommend this place.

Not in my experienc. Its like a shag carpet.

I have maybe a 50' x 50' area of that took 40 years to get there. I would never do it again. It gets so thick you can hardly mow it.
Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like a grass that wakes up in late May, goes dormant in August, and grows no more than 1/2" per week.

I bought zoysia plugs from an ad in family handyman magazine last year.

They did not arrive as individual plugs, they arrived as sheets of turf, and I was expected to cut my own plugs out of the turf.

When the sheets arrived, it was not green grass it was brown.

I was kind of ticked off at this. The company said it was dormant grass.

Could not get them to grow or spread in Texas, and the company said they did not guarantee that any of it would grow.

So I paid for a company to send dead grass to my house.

I used to see them advertised in magazines in the late 70s and early 80s. Wasn't sure how they were supposed to work. If you really want zoysia you can get sod.

That being said, I remember as a kid I'd get a ride to my after school care by the husband of the owner. There was a path near by school and a few times he saw the zoysia growing there (frankly growing over the pavement) and he would pull some out to take home. I don't know how legal it was plucking the grass growing off of a private lawn, but he seemed to think it would grow if he's just put it back.

What are these kids made of; toilet paper?

I played numerous pickup football games on a neighbor's zoysia lawn when I was 10-12 years old. It's a tough grass but cuts? No.

I've seen really thick and fibrous zoysia runners. They were almost woody.

However, the best grass I've ever seen was on a Major League Baseball field. I've seen golf courses, and that's more a matter of how it's cut. However, that baseball field was perhaps the most perfect grass I've ever seen. It was almost perfectly flat. It had the occasional divot, but was otherwise pristine.
