What goes on during plug in hybrid garage fire.

According to the first post, it was a plug in hybrid that got things rolling.
Maybe speculation. How did the fire actually start - root cause? It's not in the video that I heard. The announcer was not that great just repeating jargon.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone here had a battery powered tool start smoking, or blaze up while charging?

No. The only time I had a problem, never reached chemical combustion, but rapid heat and gas release was when trying to change the battery in my daughter's phone. Screwdriver slipped - poked a hole, oops.............threw it outside.

I think Billy Joel started the fire, even though he vehemently claims he didnt.

On a more serious note, nice work to the Amazon driver. House on fire, fire truck roaring up behind, me, l think I'll just sit here right in front of it and chit chat with some random dude and if the first responders need more room, they can just ask nicely I guess. I would have loved to see the firetruck ram the back of the Amazon van. I stand around and watch this kind of thing like everyone else but for the love of gawd stay the hell out of police and firefighter's way.

Local contractor had a battery charging in his van sitting on the dashboard. It burned a hole through the dash. Don't know the tool brand, got the info from a member of the local FD. Just happened 2 weeks ago.
I've never trusted Li-on batteries on chargers unattended since these issues starting getting reported.

There was also the brief moment when a particular Android phone was banned from FAA flights...

LiPo batterys are wonderful modern tech, but they absolutely do not forgive carelessness or abuse in design or usage.

You never know the cause of a fire until you know the cause.
House fires caused by electricity take place what? At least every 30 minutes in the USA? We dont know if it was the car or the wiring to the charger.

There are people on this very website who solidly believe Li based batteries just take off and go fully exothermic spontaneously and need no cause.

I am NOT saying super dense energy sources are never dangerous.

It was Samsung. Galaxy Note 7.

And I once got a message from dispatch, an hour after departing Newark, that one of our ramp workers had lost their Galaxy Note 7 and thought it might be in our cargo compartment.

They asked what I wanted to do - and even suggested that we return to Newark - but since it hadn’t caught fire already, and we have fire suppression, we elected to continue on to Chicago, or Denver, where ever it was that we were going.
