Research, plan and financing. Like others here, I know what I want, already have my financing ready to go. I call up the Honda dealer in OKC, tell them what I want and what I'll pay for it. They agree. Car is ready next day. Go in, sign some stuff and out in about one hour. You can pretty much find out what the invoice price is on about any car. I tell the dealer....I know what this car costs, I know you got to make a living also, but you're not going to have to waste you time on me. This is what I want and this is what I think is a fair price. That has worked well for me.

I understand they have to make a profit, I come up with a
number lower than what they quote me and then I shut up. The
first person that speaks usually loses. If they won't budge
and I really want the car I go up in small increments, usually
$200's. Also, check out beatthecardealer.com and beatthecarsalesman.com

What are the changes? Can you please share? Thanks

The service department added "add to the sale" service advisors. Sales people don't seen very happy anymore...

^^HUGE 2nd on hating that sleazy line! Yeah,I`m just going to reach in my pocket and pull out tens of thousands of dollars on an impulse buy! They all act like you`re just buying a new pair of shoes or something.

Salesman suck.

And that attitude puts you on a par with the sales people you're trying to "swindle". Grow up and get over it.

And they (and the buying experience) always will if that's the attitude you walk in with. Sheesh.

Before a recent test drive of a manual Pathfinder the sales guy told me I'd really like the "close ratio" transmission because the shifter had really short throws...

He was a nice enough guy though, but I wonder why there isn't a basic level of car knowledge needed to sell cars?

Good salesmen are very valuable and helpful professionals. Problem is the bad ones give them a bad name.

True. Works the same with cops, doctors, lawyers, heck everybody. Well, maybe able to take out the lawyers, LOL.

Problem is that there are actually very few GOOD car salesmen around.

Like another posted commented, don't bother with the salesman, just politely request to speak directly to the sales manager, just make sure you know exactly what you want and how much you are willing to pay, don't negotiate. If the best deal he can do is not good enough, walk out immediately don't let them delay you unless they agree to what you want.

My gf and I were looking at buying her a brand new car a few years back. This early 20-something year old girl met us in the parking lot to show us a brand new Focus. I asked her a couple of questions about the engine and transmission and she just giggled and said verbatim,"Heeheeheehee! I don`t know". I asked her to find the engine and tranny dipsticks for me so I could have a look at the fluid and she giggled again and said she didn`t know where they were, and this was after I had to show HER how to open the hood. I was like, what the heck???????????? I asked her if she was a door greater/receptionist and if I could get a genuine salesperson to help me,she responded,"I`m a salesperson",and smiled and giggled again. Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the end, they tried to bump up the final salesprice of the car AFTER we signed the deal and drove home. I was like [censored] NO!!!!!!!! I went straight to the sales manager`s office and took my deposit check off his desk myself, and after a taste of his attitued,I came very close to causing some serious bodily harm to that [censored]. I probably came close to going to getting arrested for assault that day.

BUT,I feel I got the last laugh because that place went belly up a few weeks later, due to crooked and shady buisiness practices,HAHA!

This is what I want and what I'm willing to pay for it...This is what I have and what I expect to get for it...If you can't do it, someone else can! Simple and easy, never had a problem with this strategy. I do have an 8 year,3 vehicle relationship with the mega dealer (meaning lots of stores and all of the brands) I purchase from so I'm sure that helps.

My parents have ordered a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. They had the dealers tell them some funny things in the process.

First, dad went to the Jeep dealer WHERE HE ORDERED THE JEEP, to see if he could find one on the lot with a Katzkin leather package applied (since Jeep does not allow you to get the grey seats in leather). The sales person he spoke to told him matter-of-factly you can't order a 2012 yet. He said, "we don't even have pricing information on them." Dad has already ordered one. It's already been built and is on the rail car as of 3 days ago. Some guys have already got theirs! And this guy tells him they're not even in the system yet.

Second, he finally did find a Jeep with a Katzkin leather package. He and my mom went to the dealer to look at it. A sales girl came out and they said what they were looking for (the Jeep with the leather) and she couldn't find it. Another sales girl came out and tried to help, and they eventually found it. They liked the looks of it, and ordered a complete kit for their Wrangler when it comes in next week (they had to order the seats in cloth because they wanted grey). Mom said when they were leaving, she heard one of the girls ask the other...

"Is that made out of real cat skin?"

"No, that's just the name of the company."

"Oh."
