You know you're a real bitoger when...

I'm going to have to admit that she is the most BITOG member that exists: Frying up fish in Motor Oil.

The chemistry in motor oil is not safe for human consumption. Many years ago there was a news clip about some foreign country where food was fried in motor oil and the results were devastating to those who consumed it. Granted that that was several decades ago so the chemistry of motor oil has changed but there is no way that this can be considered to be safe for human consumption.

I have to agree I have done plenty of stupid things in my life and use to be a big risk taker but this is really dangerous

You cut open your entire stash of 6 oil filters, because someone commented in a thread— That there might be a cosmetic difference in some of them.

You know the part number for your oil filter (across multiple brands) and check prices and for elusive wire backed filter media when shopping in any store that carries oil filters.

Last year I changed my oil in my driveway and just waited for it to fully drip out, it was a hot spring day with no wind and I was there a good 5 to 10 minutes and I felt sick afterwards. Just from the vapors unless that was coincidence, now I just pull the plug and roll myself out from under it.

You have discussions with people about what's inside the filter you cut open and show pictures KNOWING that they think your crazy anyway. Then they might ask WHY do you have something to cut your oil filters open?
I've had people ask why I have a $256 bottle of Scotch that I bought 6 years ago, when I could just get fireball cinnamon whiskey for way cheaper. Or why did I have 200 quarts of oil then pick up 50 more years ago when KMart was clearing out Mobil 5000 for .80 cents a quart. They'll never understand.

There was a news clip about someone frying up food in motor oil many many years ago. The customers got very sick. It was suspected that some had symptoms similar to PREGERIA.

You take pictures of the on sale oil that just arrived from WM.

You're completely happy with your used vehicle(s) but still stew over the oil & filters the previous owner MUST have used.

BONUS: You mock him because you KNOW he changed the air filter too frequently.

You still play with the heavily dusted Lucas Stabilizer display....still.

You find a bottle of 0w16 and shake it in amazement and disbelief and truly admit to yourself and someone else there is no way that's going in a car of your stable EVER.

You give a second look to the 20,000 mile advertising from both Supertech,QSUD as you try to save money in this uncertain economy and see them under 20$ a jug.

Looks are given to the ST 20k oil filters, though you feel better with a Tough Guard or Ultra as far as fitment.

You laugh inside when you see someone buy the white can of Seafoam knowing it does nothing, has no PEA and costs more than the Gumout Multitune which is cheaper, has PEA and can be used to help lessen GDI issues.

You open the fram filter and finger the hole to make sure there isn't any snags or sharp metal slivers along with making sure the filter matches the box. You soon discover you knicked your finger, an associate has called the manager and after thirty minutes of first aid you get a 10 dollar gift card. After your near death experience you investigate and find a couple other boxes have been tampered with and you proceed to take them to the same manager to start a criminal investigation as a thank you for his helping you.

You provide tech support to the unknowing in the automotive aisle. Your summer job at a parts store as the driver gets a big jump in confidence and your tell them everything about oil that they didn't know and probably didn't want to know.

I haven't seen one of those Lucas rigs since ... Friday. 😁

@97prizm - funny you should quote the filter cutter. My boss made the comment last week after I helped him with his boiler. I cut the filter open afterward. His comment "of course you would have a specialty tool to make perfectly clean cuts in an oil filter". I laughed but it made it real easy to show him why his boiler stopped running. He completely understood afterward. ;) :D

The worse case of using lubricating oil for cooking occurred in Morocco in 1959, leaving over 10,000 people paralyzed. In this case the oil was surplus jet engine oil (Mil-L-7808) sold by the US Military and blended into cooking oil by local companies. This oil contained about 3% of tricresyl phosphate (TCP) that was high in the ortho isomer, a potent neurotoxin. The current version of this oil still contains TCP for wear protection but at very low ortho isomer levels, as do virtually all POE based jet engine oils.
