Hmmmm, not recommending the 14459? Looks bigger on the outside, but then there's the inside with that wider centertube isn't there?

Have to check the total media area on the 14610 to compare, the next time time I cut a used one open.

I think the 14610 and 14459 basically have the same media area (~85 sq-in) based on measurements taken. The 14459 may not fit all Nissan engines due to the larger diameter, but the 14610 should fit since the diameter is the same as OEM filters.

I agree the 14610 will (should) fit anywhere the Nissan shorty fits. Based on posted pics on that older thread though, I thought the 14459 looked to be a better fit on your 3.5L with oil cooler than the 14610. Not as obvious though on the 2.5L's.

That said, not sure the newer/newest 3.5L would fit the 14459.

I wouldn't say the 14459 fit better than the 14610 on the 3.5L ... they both fit fine since the oil cooler on the 3.5L V6 is nice and wide. Yes, the fit of the 14459 (due to the larger filter diameter) on the 2.5Ls might be a different story. I recall it was a "close fit" on yours.

OK, on your 3.5L shown in the thread below the PL14459 seems to fit at least as well as the 14610 on the 3.5L. As the thread also show the 14459 also fits the 2.5L, at least some models. It's a close fit, but fits. Again, don't know about the newest model 2.5L.

Here's the thread comparing filter applications for 2.5L/3.5L and 14610/14459.

Yep, like I said above, "they both fit fine" on the 3.5L.

I'm not a fan of Wix filters in the smaller sizes because their standard bypass valve assembly takes up so much room in the can that it leaves very little room for the actual filter. They seem to use the same valve assembly in the little thimble filters as they do in a big ol' FL1A sized quart o' fun.

Sloppy engineering work IMO.

My Corolla has had a teacup sized filter since it's birth long ago. 210,000 miles and purring like a kitten. No oil consumption, no sludge, and no unfiltered goo in the engine. This whole preoccupation with size is a waste of time.

If you really want to know how a filter performs, you must view Beta and PC analysis.

I did the same for my VQ35. We referred to the subject filter as the "thimble". It may (and probably does) work just fine, but it IS crazy small compared to just about any other can filter out there.

its a nissan thing. My filter on my SuperCharged Xterra V6 is the size of a dixie cup. The filter on my Yamama crotch rocket is bigger than the one for the Xterra....The yamaha inline 4 cyl holds just as much oil too.

Everyone that I know that has a Nissan follows the severe service interval. I won't let them go any further. Nissan sumps are too small and the filters pathetic. To use oil longer, you need media to capture and hold stuff. Thimble size filter can only filter so much and hold so much. Doesn't help that the sump size is a little too small compared to competitor engines in the same size/hp level.

Those superb factory engineers are also the cause of all the TSB's, service bulletins, recalls, and issues... that the vehicle has. 1000's of hours of bench testing is meaningless. The real world trumps their testing every time.

If you own a Nissan and don't want to practice the 3750 intervals, invest in a remote oil filter kit using a ph8a or double ph8a filters. This way, you get a real dose of media, a sump increase, and the ability to seriously increase your OCI.

I disagree. My Nissan's QR25DE has a 5-quart sump. How is that too small? And to get good filtering you don't need to invest in a remote oil filter kit. I've been using the DENSO 150-1010 (i.e. cross refs to PL14610) and in a recent UOA insolubles were only 0.2%, indicating that it did a fine job filtering during the 6K OCI. And whether or not you need to practice 3750 OCIs is dependent on a number of variables including driving conditions and what oil you're using. The UOA I link above objectively shows that for my driving conditions and oil choice, I can go longer than 6K. You can't make a blanket statement that all Nissans should do 3750.

the xterra has a bad reputation and many people have done the offroad style ph8a and extra cooler route. Being a truck adding that stuff is easier and kinda fun. For the car do a 5k uoa and take it from there.
