Here is a side by side of the Wix vs a Purone for my Subaru (same filter as the OP)

Both are the SAME SIZE filter. From this thread....

Yep, as expected.. that is too small IMHO. I'd stick with the Purolator... looks to have more pleats and tighter arrangement. Nothing wrong with a small can as long as the media inside makes up for it. Doesn't look that way with the wix.

While I appreciate good anecdotal obervations, they are just that.

If you really want to know how a filter performs, you must view Beta and PC analysis.

The small filter from the OP is the suggestion on the Protege in my signature. Mazda recommends 5k severe service and 7500 for normal service.

I am currently using the longer filter on it. I alternate between short and tall. I haven't noticed a difference.

dnewton3 wouldn't you agree that all else being equal, a larger filter would perform better? The specs. on several PureOne filters seems to bear this out. For example, the PL14610 is only rated at 99.9% at 40 microns, while the PL14459 is 99.9% at 20 microns. No cost difference between the two, so why not go with the bigger filter and get better performance?

Aw, you're family laughing at how well endowed your car is?

That's just mean!

Tell 'em it ain't the size, it's how well you use it!!!

Sure your wife will tell you size does not matter, its the beta ratio that counts, but deep down inside she's thinking man this dude's got a small filter I wish he had a big ole donaldson P169071.

DNewton3: I understand what you are saying but the weakest link in the chain comparison fits here. If I use a high quality oil and want to extend OCI's, a 1" high filtering media is insufficient. If filters were unimportant why do the big rigs focus so much on the filtering systems. They really look to filtration as an engine life extender. Meanwhile, though my Altima may not haul loads (besides my fat a@$) the beta ratio on these small filters are mainly 97% or so efficient at 40 microns. I want at least that @ 20mu's. Wouldn't you agree today's 'tighter' engine specs and clearances need the filtration too?

Plus the smaller filters are more expensive than the larger equivalents in a lot of cases; at least that's what my checkbook says.

LMAO!! Cheap entertainment in these tough times..LOL

Get any brand filter that is spec'ed for the year 2000 Maxima. Its the longer version. It will be longer whether you go with any Champion, Wix, Purolator, etc filter.

Yeah know what's strange ... Nissan's filter p/n specs out their shorter filter for the 3.5L V6 and their longer filter for the 2.5L I4 engine. Seems like the V6 should have the larger filter.

Use a Purolator 14610 ... it's the biggest filter I've found for the 3.5L V6.

The specified WIX or NAPA Gold filter for the Nissan will have even a shorter filter canister inside due to the base end bypass valve design.

Beta shmeta, I'm worried about flow with that filter. Keep in mind the Purolator 14612 is tiny, so that wix is silly small and has media envy next to the purolator. I couldn't care less about the difference between 90 and 99% efficiency at some minuscule micron level.

Hmmmm, not recommending the 14459? Looks bigger on the outside, but then there's the inside with that wider centertube isn't there?

Have to check the total media area on the 14610 to compare, the next time time I cut a used one open.

Is there a crossover listing that shows not only the thread size and part number, but also the bypass spring setting, and the capacity for each filter?

Both Wix and Fram have good online filter cross referencing. You can put in a competitor's number and then you get the Wix or Fram number and the specs. on that filter.

I wonder if these smaller filter's are more of an improvement than people think.

With modern oils/engines leaving less junk to be filtered during use (assumption), the smaller media packs probably fill to capacity at a similar rate as a larger filter with older oils/engines.

Just like an air filter, an oil filter should become more efficient with use. Perhaps with a larger filter, there's less of a chance of this happening, so the smaller filter's have a chance of performing better overall.
