Wow, driving on I-25 north of Pueblo, CO last night, I'm looking ahead and traffic is all jamming on the brakes and coming to a stop. I'm thinkin great, the roads closed from a wreck. Well, the wreck had to have happened not more than 5 minutes before we got there - no emergency or police around. Looked like a tire failed on a Toyota 4 Runner, the driver lost control and got sideways, and rolled who knows how may times through the median and landed upright in the uncoming lanes. There was bits and pieces of tire everywhere. The roof was flattened like a pancake.

What was so striking was how people reacted to it. People were out trying to slow traffic down and dozens of people were caring for the driver who was ejected - no seat belt. Looks like a person was giving him CPR right there on the highway, and his child was being tended to by several other motorists.

Unfortunetally, after watching the evening news, the driver passed away but thankfully the child did not - child as buckled in and in a car seat.

I'm glad to see good samaritans after watching the video of the man getting run over.

As Mario Andretti says in the commercials, check your tires.

I've seen some bad ones out there, too. As a teenager back in the early 90's, I arrived on the scene of a single car drunk driving accident, just after it happened. Guy was driving an old Chevelle at a high rate of speed. Lost it in a sweeping turn, flipped several times, ejected him, car rolled over him. A couple of folks were attempting to help the guy, but he was already unconscious. I witnessed the guy taking his last few breaths. That's still not the worst one I've witnessed, but nobody wants to hear about the others.

I don't get why people will not buckle up.

Some people actually believe it is safer to not buckle up, for a variety of reasons. I guess they don't believe statistics as well...

I feel weird, almost naked in my car without the seat belt on.

We actually had some idiot write to the paper recently saying seat belts were dangerous. Cited statistics from state of Ohio that say there were more injuries to people wearing seat belts than not.

Well, duh! Of course, most people wear them so there would be more injuries. Plus define "injury": could be whiplash vs. getting your head ripped off. Incredible what people think.

John

Sorry to hear about the wreck.

If you don't have your belt on you may not be in the right position for when the air bag deploys (if it does). That in itself could be bad news.

Forget six airbags, 5mph bumpers, seatbelt pretensioners, and crumple zones. The seat belt is the most important safety feature in your car. Besides an alert driver.

To pick a nit, technically, speed doesn't kill; differential speed kills.

That's hardly a nit.

As a perfomance driving instructor, it is neither. Poor judgment kills.

It is quite possible to drive VERY fast safely, it is possible to drive fast with a speed differential, although the risk increases a lot with drivers who are not aware, but ultimately it comes down to having the proper type of car in good condition, good weather, with others who aware of what is going on around them.

Germany doesn't have one of the lowest Western world accident rates by luck. The fast drivers know what they are doing and the slower ones do too.

That's right. It's not how fast you go, it's how fast you stop!

I'm with Wavinwayne. I've seen some stuff that even Hollywood can't make up.

I just wish there was some method to go after the deceased ejectee for the disruption to traffic that he caused. The majority of most fatal accidents involves ejection. They are slowly getting removed from the gene pool, but it is a slow process
After yrs of not wearing, my kids finally convinced me to buckle up. Now I feel nekkid if I'm not lashed in.

I saw one of these too while driving back from Atlanta this past weekend. Wrecked cars (one looking like absolutely nobody could have lived) at the head of a line of traffic that converted I-85N into a parking lot for over 12 miles, all three lanes. Glad I was on I-85S. . .

It's terrible to see what can happen out there, but it does serve as an effective reminder to stay safe (for those with enough operating brain cells to process the message...).

The worst "wreck" I've ever seen was somewhere outside of Atlanta. Multiple cars all flipped on their sides and roofs. Vehicular carnage everywhere. Turns out a car hauler driver had lost control of his rig, and all of the cars on top of the hauler came off. It was a relief to know that there was nobody in those cars.

Well, that's what happened to a lot of those thousands of Explorers, when one of those high quality Firestone tires let go.

Yet people still buy Firestone tires like nothing has ever happened.

I actually saw something like this happen. It was a teal colored Ford Ranger pickup with a male driver flipping end-over-end and doing barrel rolls at the same time up in the air. Freaked me out. I stopped to try and help, but there was nothing I could have done. Some EMTs and nurses stopped and were treating the guy, but he got thrown and I doubt he survived (I don't know for sure, I didn't see a follow up story on it).

There was a blue Taurus involved, too, with a woman and kids inside. They appeared shaken, but safe.

Buckle up, folks.
