Worst wreck I've ever seen

Yeah I have this one friend who hates wearing a seat belt.

"You don't want it on if you are underwater, it could trap you."

So I asked him, let's say for those occasions when you start the car and don't immediately drive into a river, would you want your seat belt on then?

It's automatic. Like pushing the brake to shift out of park. Just part of the routine.

Some things I preach on, seatbelts, not worth it. That's something people have to realize for themselves.

I know a guy who was ejected from a car (this would have been back in the bad old days, circa 1970), pretty cut up but lived. Car hit a power pole airborne and just about split in half, landed upside down in a slough.

He got up and rushed over to try and pull the driver out, only to discover the driver had bailed out before the car became airborne.

I saw two horrific accidents. One was 36 years ago where a Corvair raced through a red light in the early morning hours and slammed head on into a pole. It burst into flames and the occupants were toasted. I tried to help them but the car was an inferno. The second fatal accident I saw involved an old VW Beetle where the driver was ejected partially through the windshield and was decapitated. It was not a pretty site. It sure spoiled my chances of scoring with my date that night. Wear your seat belts!!!

Needless to say, I have seen quite a few bad collisions/wrecks during my career. The first really bad one was while still at the police academy. Driving home from our training facility, motorist flagged us down (17 cruisers, lights going, impressive)to report the wreck. Early 80s vintage Honda Civic on the guardrail (perpendicular, front wheels had gone over it), fairly intact except for the windshield that was laying on the hood. Car had left the roadway with about 10 feet of skidmarks, went across the grassy median, and up a slight rise, came to rest in found position. Driver door was open, seatbelt was retracted. Not much damage so some of us started to search for the occupant walking. Myself and 2 others saw the bent steering wheel and along with the other clues, started looking for the body. Found him about 200 feet away, in a culvert lined with large bluestones (rip-rap). Attempted to render first aid, but was too late. One pupil was tiny, while the other was blown. Head felt like a bag of jello and he had deep gashes down to bone on his legs, arms, and torso. Very little blood from these wounds suggested immediate death on impact, then ejection, with the gash wounds coming from impact with the rip-rap. Without saying one word, watching anymore films, or being lectured ad nauseaum, this single incident drove home the importance of wearing the seatbelt. I believe had he been wearing it, he would have survived this.

It never ceased to amaze me that if crash victims had been belted, they would walk away instead of being bagged.

Come to think of it, the worst wreck I've ever seen was not one I saw in person. I'm talking about the one from the TV show "World's Wildest Poilce Videos". Two teenage kids in a small pickup trying to outrun the police. The pickup runs a redlight at a high rate of speed, and is immediately t-boned by an 18-wheeler traveling at probably 65 mph. Instant death for both kids.

Ive seen bumper hits, but nothing liek anyoen else here. But, for what its worth...
A guy i knew, about 11 years ago, was driving his 70's camaro drunk, and high on weed, passed out driving, and hit a stone wall..no seat belt. His hands went throught the dash board. Sme guy came up running to help him, guy in camaro pulls his hands outta the dash board, all covered in blood, both arm bones broken, and the guy who wnated to help, ran off scared.
A friend back in 1991, was drunk, and riding a kawasaki motorcycle up Merrit parkway... passed out, took the police 45 minutes to find his head..thier are trees their, he passed out, went off into trees probably at a good 80 mph+ , took his head off.
A friend about 12 years ago, on I 95, witnessed some guy tailgaiting a flatbed truck fast, almost bumper to bumper..suddenly, flatbed truk had to stop, and the guys head was taken clean off... as well as most of the cars roof.
On a positive lelve, same frined about 5 or 6 years ago, a budweiser truck half flipped on I 95,...beer all over the highway.. even the police were 'confiscating' it, for hteir own municipal purposes. Wish i was their for that one!

I had an accident 10 years ago coming home from my GF's house. She begged me to stay but I had to work next morning and she's 40 miles from my home, which is another long ways from work. So at 4:00 a.m. I start driving, and next thing I know I am in a ravine. Fell asleep at the wheel, I did. If I wasn't wearing a seatbelt, I would have been over the cliff after going through the open driver's window. No injuries fortunately. A tow truck got my car out, and my car was very damaged but drivable. I then slept by the side of the road, and then drove home a few hours later. Unless you are driving underwater , wear seatbelts. Not the worse accident I've seen, but my personal worse accident.

Drove by a wreck last year after it happened, passing right next to it in the very next lane. Saw the dead and bloody driver sitting in his seat as they covered him with a white sheet. Sad deal. Some idiot pulled right out in front of him and he had traffic next to him so he could do nothing but brake in his lane and hope for the best. I have no idea if the idiot that caused the crash survived or not because they were already taken away by ambulance.
