Wix XP vs Fram Ultra

Rock auto has the wix xp for half the price I can get in a parts store for my ranger. Price wise I am tempted to buy several. I normally keep fram ultras in stock for both of my vehicles, but have wanted to give the wix xp filter a try. I've tried the vanilla wix on my civic with no issues in the past, but the ultra is the only fram I have ever used.

Wix XP has a 99%@40 microns rating, Fram Ultra is 99%@20 microns.
You decide what's important to you, people here have different opinions. I personally have a Napa Platinum (same as XP) ready for my next OCI

I think I will grab a few up for the ranger and leave the civic be with fram ultra.

My Ranger had startup rattle when the ADBV does not hold. The Fram ADBV seems better than the WIX ADBV.

When buying from Rock Auto, I would make sure the filters are not close outs.

I've run a lot of Napa Platinum's (same as Wix XP) on my 2010 Honda Accord. I've run several of them for 2 OCI's (15-20k miles total).

I stocked up on them awhile ago when I bought them at $5/each. I like them.

Based on what I've come to understand the WIX XP lowers efficiency in order to increase its use time.
Which probably isn't necessary in most instances - they could have kept the standard efficiency and it should still last 20k.
The standard WIX efficiency is closer to the Ultra.

Having said that the efficiency of OEM filters is probably closer to the WIX XP. So either way I think you're fine.

Opinion? I see it in reference to the facts. B20=100 (Ultra) versus B40=100 (XP). The Ultra has better filtration by an order of magnitude. And FRAM claims it's good for 20k OCI with synthetic oil. Wallymart always has 'em on-shelf, too.

If you were paying full price for each, then definitely the Ultra. Since you are getting the XP's for half price then that's a great deal. Buy a bunch.

Tires and oil filters are two components I never want to cheap out on. I would rather spend a little more to get something better if the price is not outrageous.

I would be buying the Fram Ultra and I have bought several Wix/Napa filters before without any issues. The Fram Ultra is just on another level, the best of the best.

One is an apple that traps very well. Other is an orange that's intended for hard workers like race cars and is more free-flowing.
We have members here that use free-flowing filters and approaching 400K. So the need for high trapping filters is only necessary on poorly designed engines.

If your engine shows sludge or oil gets black and dirty in a hurry, then better traping is a must. If your manufacturer designed your vehicle to wear a high flowing diaper, then XP is your best call. It should be your vehicle's call, not your call.

Here they are side by side … note the XG has thicker media but less pleats (more 3D) … I have used more XG's
Think Wix also understands filtration … and I have always figured that even with 30 in high 90's + 20@50% … my engine is not making particulate faster than the circulation system can keep up with …

Either filter will support long engine life regardless of OCD.

Thanks guys! I have used nothing but fram ultras since 2016 albeit the few times I have used a vanilla wix. Rock auto also has fram ultras for the ranger for 2 bucks less than Wally World but I'm sure shipping would negate the saved money.

I stopped using the Ultra. Would make my Escalade 6.0 lq9 tick at startup. I changed to the less efficient tough guard. No more startup ticks. Guess it prefers better flow. Changed the whole family to tough guards for sanity.

Agreed.... I ran a plain-jane Motorcraft FL-1A to 30,000 miles back in the 1990s (with regular oil changes)

I think as long as the oil is kept clean, a filter has VERY LITTLE chance of ever plugging up.

I agree with you 100000%. Clean fresh oil is more important.

Wix XP, according to the O'Reilly's site, is 99%@35 microns. Not a huge difference, but enough to clarify.

Wasn't there an old Beetle Bug once and most of em' had no heat or oil filter, that went around a million miles?
Or was that after a fall down the steps or on my bike, where I encountered that?....lol
