Purolator One and Fram Ultra still have issues

I cut several One filters over the last year and saw a nicely made quality filter. I'm pro Boss filter and won't change my opinion on that. But when I decided to try out the One filter for better filtration, I was a bit aggravated with what I found.
I'm doing an oil change on my friends 15 RAV4 today. Yesterday I decided to try out a Fram Ultra for her engine. It's the cartridge type. The boxes are taped, and we know why. So when I got home and opened it up, I was really surprised how terrible the pleat spacing was. Definitely needs to be returned.
These were Purolator One PL14476 and Fram Ultra XG9972.

Perhaps I've been extremely fortunate, but I've had no excess glue/potting issues or any issues for that matter on the TL/L/PL(P1) 14610/12 filters and equivalent US Bosch Prem. 3323.

As for the XG cartridge, that's a wire backed synthetic media filter isn't it? Pleat spacing not as critical as cellulose non wire back media. That said, why not give the current forum favorite for Toyota, Super Tech ST9972 cartridge a shot? Wire backed synthetic, ~$3.

Yeah, if that's wire backed then no issue with the pleats on the Ultra. The Purolator One looks good, I do see the glue on the media or is that gasket from the motor? Filter caught it which is good.

The loose glue is a fail in my book. Many have had glue pieces come out of their oil pans indicating it’s making it’s way through the bypass valve and through the engine. The emotional attachment to Purulator runs deep for some reason. I’m not sure how many more QC problems it would take change peoples minds. Especially for a premium price…

On the Ultra if it’s wire backed it’s good to go. If not I’d pass.

We all have our "favorites" but they ALL fail at one point or another in time. OP simply mentioned he likes BOSS & they've been a pretty solid filter. Glue is one of the materials that can be swept in from any of them unfortunately.

I’ve always said if the louvers are open and you don’t care about efficiency run it. But for under $10 you can get a pretty darn nice filter vs $16.99.

Personally I don’t like supporting companies that could care less about quality. But that’s just me….

Yes, I know I've pushed PG quality for a while now. My first one was 2014 (Pronto Branded). I bought the cheapest filter, off eBay, for my riding mower back then, joined BITOG, cut it open to post, & saw first hand how nice it was. I didn't expect that from a "Cheapo". Ha! There for a while I was able to get the ONE's for around $6-$7 from Menards but I've not checked recently but I'd never pay $17 for any filter LOL. We're seeing big changes recently eh?. Thanks for your post. (y)

Last time I opened Purolator filters (both BOSS and One), the pleat spacing was horrible. That was about 6 months ago.

The pleat spacing on the One and Boss has been good. Even this one, which has the glue caught by the filter. Not liking that part but I know nothing got by the filtering side and the louvers were fully open. I put a Boss filter back on for this oil change. They are very well made and filters better than the Toyota filter.
Yes, The Ultra is wire backed.
