Recently I found the MGL 57151oil filter for the Ford 6.7 Power Stroke Diesel at Oreilly's for $4.99 each. I thought it was a pretty good deal even for a jobber filter but there was some discussion as to whether it was a value at that price or not. So I decided to compare it to the regular Wix 57151 just to get an idea of how it compared.
The Wix cost me $18.53 plus tax
The Oreilly cost me $4.99 plus tax.

Some noticeable differences. Wix had silicone anti drain back and the MGL had nitrile (I believe). Wix had a much larger spring in the bottom of the can. The Wix also had what looked like synthetic media, I think this is the microglass. The MGL had paper media, the same media I am used to seeing in the Wix filters I cut open, but Oreilly advertises it as microglass. Clearly they are wrong. I still think this filter is a good deal at $4.99 but everyone should be aware that the description on their website is wrong IMO.

44 pleats with louvers on the wix, 56 pleats with holes on the MGL

I will cut the one I have in use now after my current run which will be between 8 and 10k and we will see how it holds up.

Pics will not rotate but you get the idea :)

The filters aren't close to the same tier , though the question I always ask is will there be a difference over our ownership of the vehicle?

Honestly, I thought they would be closer in construction but there is a very clear difference. I agree however that my truck probably does not care or notice. It would have been interesting to see if the next UOA was different but I also changed my oil brand at the same time. So to many variables. I'll use what I have and probably go back to the Donaldson if I can find them cheap enough.

I don't know about "time wasted"-for $4.99, it's not bad. Looks a lot better than the MGL combo valve gas engine filters, I wouldn't go 10K on them, but I bet they would go 7500 without any trouble. As long as you're not starting at -10F with 15W40 & standing on it immediately!

Thanks for the comparison, appreciate it. There’s no such thing as a “time waste”. If you do what you want to do based on your free will then there is no such thing as “a waste of time”.

Donaldson is hard to beat regarding quality, if you look around on the internet decent pricing can still be found. I’m always watching for them myself for my Cummins.

I decided to cut this one at ~5k miles not that it really matters to much. Should not be long, I have trips to Connecticut, Tennessee and Ohio in the next 60 days
