Recently I found the MGL 57151oil filter for the Ford 6.7 Power Stroke Diesel at Oreilly's for $4.99 each. I thought it was a pretty good deal even for a jobber filter but there was some discussion as to whether it was a value at that price or not. So I decided to compare it to the regular Wix 57151 just to get an idea of how it compared.
The Wix cost me $18.53 plus tax
The Oreilly cost me $4.99 plus tax.
Some noticeable differences. Wix had silicone anti drain back and the MGL had nitrile (I believe). Wix had a much larger spring in the bottom of the can. The Wix also had what looked like synthetic media, I think this is the microglass. The MGL had paper media, the same media I am used to seeing in the Wix filters I cut open, but Oreilly advertises it as microglass. Clearly they are wrong. I still think this filter is a good deal at $4.99 but everyone should be aware that the description on their website is wrong IMO.
44 pleats with louvers on the wix, 56 pleats with holes on the MGL
I will cut the one I have in use now after my current run which will be between 8 and 10k and we will see how it holds up.
Pics will not rotate but you get the idea
