Up on the workbench today is a Baldwin B33, which Baldwin lists as a cross for Toyota 90915-YZZN1. I am cutting a slew of filters to compare to the Wix WL10332 that I was thoroughly disappointed with for a variety of reasons, but primarily, poorly formed louvers.

The B33 is 3 in (76.2mm) tall which taller than the Toyota 90915-YZZN1 and the Wix WL10332 by 3/8" on the Wix and 1/4" over the Toyota.

The can feels well made, and is labeled MADE IN USA, Overall the filter weighs 211.8 g. Baseplate has 8 punched holes with no evidence of any burrs on the ADBV side. Can thickness was measured to be 0.022 in. The ADBV is black but feels very pliable (possible not nitrile), not sure what material it is constructed from and Baldwin's site gave no ADBV material information for this filter, but lists the micron rating at 23 nominal and 45 absolute. The filter is constructed with The bypass valve is located in the dome end, its setting is advertised as 14 psi, and the valve seals metal on metal with no visible light leaks. The ADBV is 1/2" in Diameter. The filter core weighed 70.8 g, was 2 1/8 in tall, had 43 pleats, with a media length of 42 in, and a media thickness of 0.0295 in. The media is supported on each end by a metal end cap with no light leaks noted at the potting material, and minimal glue residue was present on the endcaps or elsewhere in the filter media. The center tube uses a spiral wound tube with well formed "Hastings Style" louvers that were all even and open with no burrs noted.

Overall the filter seems to be well constructed, a visual inspection prior to cutting would have passed my comfort test to spin on my vehicle, which by comparison, the Wix did not pass.

98.7% (99) @ 45um, no awards for efficiency here. That said, still likely better than the Toyota Thai Denso OEM. Pretty typical looking Baldwin, fwiw some find their louvers remarkable. Not readily a readily available filter to me, not one I'd chase.

Thanks for c&p.

Good information. The media looks thick. Hastings went, and more may go. Premium Guard is not going, they are doing fine. I wonder why this is.

Thanks! Great CnP for those people who run naked into the night with hands in the air when they see any louvers.
I think some people have louver derangement syndrome and automatically dismiss any filter with them. There is, and never has been, anything wrong with well formed louvers. If this Baldwin was 95% @ 20 um or better, it could have a place in the market as the new go to for those who liked the OG Wix/Napa Gold.

Purolator and Fram owned companies make filters over 95% @ 20 microns efficiency. The top Purolator is a about the same on discount or a couple bucks more than a PG made. For some reason both are stuck on making louvers except the nylon cage ones. I intend to use Amazon easy returns to send back any poor louvered filters and do my best to support the USA brands. Although my purchases are nothing.
I know Amazon is a major purveyor of made in China goods. It is an example of how pervasive their manufacturing has become. Like Baldwin, I like them, but a Boss is not so much different in price now. Baldwin is harder to get, and I don’t want old stock. The Fram and others with date codes were fresh from Amazon. I think they were shipped direct from manufacturer who have a store front on Amazon.

Sure, nothing wrong with "well formed louvers" - nobody disputes that. But, you can pick up 10 different filters and they will all have varied amounts of louver formation. So each time someone looks at a louvered center tube they need to decided if the louvers look opened well enough for them to feel comfortable using that filter. That doesn't come into play with an eCore center tube or a center tube with holes.
