Windows Vista

Ha, good old OS2 1.3. We ran it on AT's connected to a mainframe.. This was when IBM was having a tiff with MS over the windows gui.

That Parallels thing looks cool. I've got a copy of IBM PC Dos 7.0, If you would like a copy. The only one written by IBM. A big improvement over MS-dos 6.

I've got an old System sitting over in the corner with an Intel 500mz III MB in it. I'm tempted to try installing OS2 on it.

PC DOS 7, I have that too as part of my OS Boneyard. Although I never could quite get used to the "e" editor from IBM. Arcane commands to say the least. I copied MS's edit.com and mshlp.hlp to any installation of PC-DOS. PC-DOS was great, it had a leaner kernel and gave more memory to apps below 640K.

Geez. Who talks about anything in KB anymore? It's either MB or GB. LOL

OS2...great server OS, terrible desktop OS.

I had the displeasure of supporting it for several years on the desktop in a 1500 user enterprise. Both 2.1 and 3.0. I counted my Amens when we went to NT4.0, which is saying something.

I have used most versions of Vista and I have got to say......well its pretty.

I ran a version(cant remeber which number, sorry) and I installed in on a 2Ghz, 512MB ram. I have NEVER had an install take that looooong. It literally took over 4 hours to install. And then 15+ mins to boot to the desktop. this thing is gonna be a total bear to run. If you dont have the most powerful machine on the market, Vista is gonna work you over good.

I am sure it wont be like WindowsME. ME was a very "odd" operating system. I have talked to a couple people who said it worked perfectly for them without any glitches but the vast majority agree that it was a terrible product. It was too unstable, had driver issues unlike any I had ever seen, and the name bothered me.

WindowsME - Is this OS trying to say it will taylor itself to my needs? well, I dont crash every 30 mins so I find that insulting

Windows Millenium Edition - Well this fits, it makes your machine get the attitude of HAL! MS should have just given more accurate error messages like, "I don't like you", "Haha! I am NEVER gonna work with that scanner no matter what drivers you try. You might as well stop", "You wouldnt believe how bad of an error I just had.....but you are gonna find out!".

This doesn't look good:

Will Vista stall Net traffic?

"It is going to be mud season on the Internet, where things will just be kind of slow and gooey." --Paul Mockapetris,
DNS inventor

Even if you don't use Vista, or even Windows, you may suffer.

I've been teaching myself HTML and web page design with CSS. I know what you mean about the learning curve getting steeper with time.

If you're interested in Linux, give UBUNTU a try. It's free, they will even snail mail you a CD with UBUNTU on it for free if you ask.

http://www.ubuntu.com/

It's the number one Linux distribution now by a big margin. There are other good ones, but UBUNTU has the best combination of easy installation, easy use and good online support. UBUNTU is a branch of the very popular Debian distribution but UBUNTU is more user friendly with a much friendlier to newbies user community.

I'm still primarily using Windows but getting more comfortable with Linux. By the time Vista becomes near mandatory for Windows, I will be ready to cut my MS ties.
