Wife Laptop Croaking

I know this ship has sailed since you said she bought a new system already, but why did it need to be replaced? Was it physically broken?
Pretty much a combo of Gorilla tape holding it together, spilled sweet drinks, old hardware and lack of upgradability (yes sure, but not like a desktop) and weak architecture from the get go. That's why I encouraged forward looking with this purchase.

The e-death throws did seem to be mostly internal power related, but I never got specific on the cause.

I learned Dell doesn't sell a numeric keypad unit through Costco. Interesting useless factoid to my wife, I am geezer who somehow likes a numeric keyboard. Odd guy warning.
Maybe it comes from your fond memories when you used a Teletype 33 with the optional numeric keypad?

At least you were not trying to find the paper tape punch option.

My wife ordered a nice Dell machine from CostCo. Over the budget by a little, but it should last. Costco is just easy to deal with, frankly and better cc points than Fido card elsewhere.

Funny you should say that. My wife who works with numbers all day long doesnt use the numeric keypad to the right of a keyboard.
She uses the top. I dont know how she does it, I insist on having one.
Her company allows her to buy certain items so she is most comfortable, also for repetitive stress work related. Custom mouse etc. Anyway, she intentionally bought a keyboard for her work station without the numeric keypad on the right.

That Asus is actually a really nice laptop. I was window shopping the 13" myself and will probably order one in a year or two.

Specifically regarding business/workstation class computers (HP Pro/Elite, Lenovo Think, Dell XPS/Latitude):

HP's Spectre line up to their business models are built good if you decide to change your mind. Any of their mondels lower than the Envy is terrible and not worth as a paperweight. We exclusively use HP Pro/Elite desktop and laptops at work, including field workers.

Lenovos are nice but I've come across more battery and charging circuit issues within 4 years for Lenovos compared to HP and Dell.

I haven't used a Dell in a long time but my friend that works for a school district uses Dell laptops. They seem to be built pretty reliable. I'm not sure what his failure rates on their laptops are but not enough to complain about lol.

Does she care of it's a convertible/2-in-1?

I carry a Dell notebook for work, Lenovo for personal use. My Dell has traveled the world multiple times and never failed. I have broke two Lenovos over the past three years. One of the Lenovos that broke was after I dropped it, and later my youngest grandson jumped on it. The Lenovo continued to work for about three months after the Grandson having physical fun with the Lenovo.

My assessment on a macro basis, a Dell is like a 2024 Chevy Tahoe, a Lenovo is like a mid size 2024 Lexus unibody SUV. Both outstanding vehicles, but the Tahoe can take more abuse and neglect than the Lexus unibody SUV.

Help me out here. Wife asking me for help (miracle)

Her 6 year old+ Win laptop is about done choking.

Would like to get her something solid, quick, under $1000 15"+ etc with low hassle factor and credit card points. She went all DIY and ordered something from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQ235WJ2?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
And they didn't send the model she ordered - returned - they gave a full refund, thank goodness. I haven't bought a laptop is many years. What retailer?

EDIT: Windows PC Only
Costco for there extra warranty and very little bloatware when you first open it up.

My stepmom needed a new laptop.. and I had a nice one all picked out good sale at bestbuy.. she ended up buying a purple netbook(amd brodozer something 1/4 the cpumark speed) for more than the I5 I picked out .. but purple.

2 years later was slow and no w11 update.. so I picked out another one.. told her to get a giant decal if she didnt like the color... 😂 😂 😂 😂.

Whatever you select, strongly recommend avoiding HP laptops. HP went from a solid product to the worse name brand laptops on the market, from build quality to bloat wear.
The HP laptop I purchased at Costco a year ago has been fantastic, solid build and only one bloatware item from McAfee which was quickly eliminated, three minutes after lifting the lid for the first time. In a year McAfee has not resurfaced, not even once. I paid $500 less 5.25% CC reward. It has not burped once or caused me any grief. So happy with this purchase.

Sorry to disagree but its like the Onkyo CD changer I bought on Amazon from the returns warehouse, 80% positive ratings and 20% negative. Looked at it from the glass 80% full aspect. It's been great for over 10 years. I have been and still am a champion of Dell desktops, never a bad one. Two different Dell laptops were just horrible. It's all a crapshoot out there.
