Mom's Amazon account was hacked at second time

............ 67/70. There is something about that generation and phone calls. Back in the day everyone in the house raced to the phone whenever it rang to make sure someone picked it up....like just in case the president himself might be calling. It must have been against the law to not pick up the phone when it rang.

They've gotten rid of their land-line but to this day they answer every single phone call that comes through their cell phones. Even though I keep telling them "if you don't know the number, don't answer it". Their response is always: "but what if it is important and someone needs to get in touch with me?".

Many times I've heard them say..."yes, this is he/she", and give out their address or confirm their phone number....finally to say they are not interested once they figure out it is a telemarketer, scammer, etc.

My mother is also guilty of clicking on every pop-up on her phone and computer that says she has a virus. I swear she has 5 different anti-virus programs on her phone and computer and wonders why they don't work.
I think you are thinking of older folks. Us late boomers do none of this and most are pretty darn savvy. We were pretty much the first PC gen. I believe it's more like 77/80 yo's this fits better.

Your parents aren't typical. Wife and I are both 69 and I put my cell on silent and she has hers set to ring only from family. Anybody else; wait until we get to you, if we bother. Phone is a tool, not a boss. We don't watch for the mailman either.
SPAM is SPAM and your parents need to learn the difference.
P.S. Boomers invented and developed all the stuff younger folks think is their world.

You and @CleanSump are 100% correct. In my parents (67/70) case, they identify as 87/90! They have always avoided computers like they are some sort of satanic devices so they are behind the times!

They also have their basement full of old cassette tapes, Tupperware, VCR's, Direct-TV boxes and old magazines.

My mother used to say, if it's that important, they'll call back.

My wife and I have tried to convince her parents (mother) to stop answering the phone to no avail. It goes like this: ring ring. Helllo? Yes, speaking. No, I don't have Blue Cross. No. I have United Healthcare. No. No. Good Bye! Then she complains about the phone call for a while about idiots calling her.

We ask why she answered the phone, why she's talking to strangers and why she's divulging personal information. That the people calling are very intelligent and sophisticated. It's not one guy alone in his basement doing this. It's a large criminal enterprise taking on millions each year. My wife had it set up so all doctors and pharmacy calls go to her instead of her mother.

Then the phone rings and my mother in law answers it again.

My dad passed at 94 but yeah when he was around 92 and my mom was ~ 91, some guy called "from B of A" and they gave them all the info they needed!

Luckily - B of A was good, no money LOST.

BUT B of A was completely terrible at closing that account and detaching it from everything. Took my brother and I tag team a LOOOONG time.

POINT: The hackers knew INSTANTLY when the money freeze was lifted, because of course B of A still used the hacked phone#/email for notification. This can be a real weakness...........

And yep my dad answered every time the phone rang. I disconnected it. It RANG CONSTANTLY. All trash calls.

EDIT PS: These same parents made it $ fine, but then when older kept millions in bank accounts...........just saying.

It took a lot of convincing from myself and my brother and sister to get our Mom to hang up on these callers. She just couldn't be that rude and do that to someone until we emphasized that their goal is to steal your money, your information, etc.

Took 5o minutes on the phone with Amazon to initiate termination of the account which takes them another 5-7 days. Mail password will be changed next.
