Help me out here. Wife asking me for help (miracle)

Her 6 year old+ Win laptop is about done choking.

Would like to get her something solid, quick, under $1000 15"+ etc with low hassle factor and credit card points. She went all DIY and ordered something from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQ235WJ2?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
And they didn't send the model she ordered - returned - they gave a full refund, thank goodness. I haven't bought a laptop is many years. What retailer?

EDIT: Windows PC Only

Dell has been pretty solid for the company I work for. They used to use Lenovo for the larger discount but ended up switching. I like my current Dell more than the Lenovo I had before. I don’t own a personal laptop so all I’ve got are those two references. 🤷

I've had good luck with Lenovo machines in the past, particularly their Thinkpad series. The keyboards are excellent and they're generally well constructed. You can get them cheap with "factory renewed" on amazon.

@Pablo - I’ve had several Dell computers. My wife’s is a Dell XPS 13” bought at Costco for a significant savings.

This model - really nice machine with a beautiful display, light weight, and long battery life. She uses it all the time.

I never had an issue with Dell in all my years of buying them. IMO it's a "get what you pay for" brand. Want a cheap laptop and you'll get just that, want a high end desktop and you'll get close to that at a premium price over what you could DIY.

It's all about specs vs. price.

Easy choice. Lenovo laptop from Costco.

Costco almost always has a Lenovo on instant rebate. Three weeks ago I paid $900 USD for a 14" Lenovo at Costco, could not be happier (except the windows 11 home privacy issues).

Of note, this Lenovo has a bigger screen than many 15" notebooks, is super light, and super well built.

Whatever you select, strongly recommend avoiding HP laptops. HP went from a solid product to the worse name brand laptops on the market, from build quality to bloat wear.

Indeed.

I turned her to the Costco site and I hear her up in the palace of all things girlie "oohing" and "ahhing" with an occasional "AMD or Intel?" mumble..........

And NO HP anything in this house. I've been to one their factories years ago.

This will be a utility for your Wife. Saving $200. +/- for a poorer quality notebook is not worth the savings.

Folks, I have gone back and deleted all of the off topic posts, as well as an error I made.

Most of this thread is personal bickering. Nine posts are gone.

Please. This isn’t a windows v. Apple debate. Nor is this an invitation to criticize each other.

The next bickering/personal post will earn the poster a vacation.

My wife ordered a nice Dell machine from CostCo. Over the budget by a little, but it should last. Costco is just easy to deal with, frankly and better cc points than Fido card elsewhere.

I learned Dell doesn't sell a numeric keypad unit through Costco. Interesting useless factoid to my wife, I am geezer who somehow likes a numeric keyboard. Odd guy warning.

I agree, you get what you pay for.

Amazingly (you might think anyway) I agree with the posts on the Dell XPS and with a Lenovo Yoga making sure it has the EVO architecture.
I dont think you can go wrong by selecting from those two, actually the only two brands I would consider.

As you know we are almost all Apple now BUT my wife has what I bought for her a Lenovo Yoga EVO maybe 3 Christmas's ago. EVO architecture was new at the time I think and was the answer to Apple M1 chips coming out at the time. Which she bought me a MacBook Air. This isnt a comparison but I know you know my history so wanted to explain more in case you forgot.

She wasnt ready to leave the windows world 100%. She uses the Lenovo more than her Mac desktop that I also bought her. She LOVES the Lenovo to this day. It's really nice, back then there was an weakness with the hinges and Lenovo paid for someone to come to the house, order the parts and replace the entire screen, hinges and top cover, never an issue since. A little about my wife, she is a real intelligent person as well. Holds a significant position in her company and works all day with companies around the world on a company supplied Dell work station if that means anything. I am only saying this to say she is pretty qualified working on computers, her company work station with multiple screens is quite impressive and the fact she is so happy with this Lenovo says something as she is also very particular.

Anyway, no issues at all and that personal Lenovo laptop, next to her Dell desktop work station goes all day long. By that I mean, as she is working, she also has her personal Lenovo running all the time on a stand next to her desk *LOL*

Thanks for bringing that up. I, too, like a numeric keypad, and it hasn't occurred to me to look for that feature as all my machines, going back to 1989 (the 8088 days) had one. I'm looking for a new laptop now, so I'll pay attention to the keyboard features. And I'll pay attention to this thread.

Did you use the Costco VISA? In any case, how many points did you get?

If I were to buy a laptop, it would be the business line or nothing, probably from HP or Lenovo. I have these as work laptops and they are very well built. Nothing flashy or anything like that, but they can take a beating and keep working.
And they usually have upgradable memory and drives.

Why those over Dell? Dell biz is all my old company used
