The ride quality penalty and traction penalty with the higher pressures just aren't worth it.

Good pressure(s) is difficult to achieve. It depends on the car(performance, family sedan, minivan, SUV ...) , tire (summer, all-season, snow ...) road condition ... You have no choice other than trying different pressures to get the right one for your car and your current tire.
