i'm in the market and been thinking about snow tires for my little truck (ranger). it has 215/75R/15" tires on it. what is a good value these days for regular snow tires? my truck is a 2 wheel drive and pretty light, so i feel it would be best to put regular snows on the back. i'm looking for a tire that will be used strictly in the winter month's, and something i can buy from discount tire, sears, firestone, or other regular chain tire dealer's.

Id do a search at tirerack for snows in that size - it may be a common size.
Id also look to see if you can get BFG all terrain radial KO tires. I have them on my truck, and they have a "snow tire rating, which makes them suitable for use as snow tires. I like them a lot, and they could be used as all season use, if you desire.

if you want standard studdable snow tire (studded or not)
Its hard to beat the firestone winterforce.
And its widely available.
If you are going to keep the truck around it would be worthwhile to snag 4 junkyard rims and a set of 4 winter tires..
It will make it into a beast in the winter.
(add 100-200# sand into the bed over axle)

I've been eyeing the Winterforce for my HHR this winter. TR has a great price on them right now.
Do you, or anyone else know if these are a silica compound? I've not found any specifics on any site in regard to the type of compound used. The 3d tread looks efficient, but a little light on number of sipes compared to the newer Conti Extreme WinterContact as an example. How do you find they work in your car on ice and how heavy is your ride?

rand, i've got 2 extra rims to mount the snows on. i usually toss a little bit of firewood in the back if needed for traction. thanks for the tip on the firestone winter force.
I used sandbags in a frame I made .. I didnt want to die to a block of wood coming through the back window in a panic stop.
I like being able to turn too thats why I run 4 winter tires..
It sucks making a left turn at a light and you miss the road and hit a pole or curb.
We have tons of black ice around here.

Is 215 the smallest size the door jamb will let you run? My dakota took 195s.
The skinny ones slice through better, your biggest challenge.
I think those firestone winterforces were at walmart a few years ago (they're very sporadic, you have to time them just right-- or ask the TLE guy to order them) and only $50 a tire in a smaller (175/70/14) size...
When I had that dakota I just never shoveled out the bed, a plan that was beautiful in its simplicity.
Also look for cooper (private label?) Artic Claws, maybe a cooper dealer can get them. I have those now.

These michelin Latitude X-Ice seem to be excellent, and have slightly better reviews than the Firestone winterforce. They were the only 2 winter tires available in that size. It probably would help a great deal to stick a couple bags of sand in the back of the truck too.

HM, seriously consider four snow tires. Your fronts have the job of steering and most of the braking. Snows there work very well.

She saw a jacked-up pickup trying to pass her, he dropped back, and the next thing she saw has the truck barrel rolling in the median. She was traveling straight, secure, and steady.
Consumer Reports has snow tires in this month's issue.
