Why Toyota and Honda have no oil specs?

Does GM get any money from oil companies when they advertise as DEXOS approved, or from the testing the companies go through to use the label?
Yes, they have to pay to put that approval on their packaging.
Oh I get it, but they state it meets, (at least) the spec. My point is, you can meet the spec without having the license. The licence is the $$$$ for them.
In the case of Amsoil (and others that don't pay), it's a case of "trust us" when they say they meet the spec. They probably do, but they don't need it on their label so why pay for it. Amsoil is tiny in comparison to the oil brands on the shelf at Walmart and auto parts stores.

Knowing that isn't going to make me stop buying M1 because some of my money is somehow going to GM, but I wonder how much better off they'd be if they focused their efforts on their product instead of trying to milk royalties (if that's the right word) for some nonsensical certification they've created

No. i think they say what they want, and have the blenders make it to their liking, lest they not get the Dexos sticker, and making the blender lose money because they would not have the license and not sell oil to 99% of the public. Plus making the blender spend $$4 to get their licence. Just becuase it meets the spec, doe not mean they get a licence.
Is the sample testing all part of the smoke and mirrors show from GM? If they allegedly don't do any of their own testing, then I wonder if I can submit an oil outside of their requirements, but still get a license.

I would not call Dexos a "spec" as a "certification" many oil meet or exceed the "spec" but cannot advertise as such.

Why?

Because they do not pay GM the $$$$ to list their stupid label on their bottle.

Toyota and Honda play the long game.
How would you know that? You don’t do you?’

The one some of these members are alleging here. They seem to believe GM doesn't do anything, but sell a license.
Ok, I think that’s noise and it’s almost always about GM - all OEM’s have recommended specs or similar - and jug to jug its peanuts. The ones who complain are bulk sellers who don’t have to.
I’d rather that OEM’s trust but verify …

GM Dexos license is simply a way for GM to get money from people who don’t drive GM cars. It’s pretty brilliant.
No other car manufacturers specifies dexos beside GM for their vehicles, so it's not marketing dexos oil to other brands of vehicles.
