That's just laughable
I thought the old one looked a little better. Saw one today in black that looked okay. Maybe growing on me a tiny bit. Reminds me too much of a minivan. I do like the trunk in the bed. When they first came out I told the saleslady they look real nice, kind of being sarcastic. She barely acknowledged what I said. I was looking at a different car at the time. Doesn't compare to a real truck. More of an El Camino type or sport utility vehicle.

Its not a "real" truck, but neither are most SUVs these days - most are unibody and are reasonably tough, and actually safer than BOF trucks of old (and current).
Since its like a minivan chassis or something like that, it has enough load carrying capacity for some basic tasking, like most homeowners and light duty users.
There are all sorts of varieties of light, medium and heavy duty trucks.
This happens with true, real trucks (say, 3/4 ton commercial pickups through class 8 or whatever is biggest), and nobody blinks an eye - the right truck for the job and use profile. Why should it be any different with these types of trucks?
Don't think Id ever buy one... But they have their place. Vehicles like this have been built since at least the early 60s.

I like the look of the old Ridgeline and Pilot better.

It handles all of my "truck" needs. But, I like El Caminos and Rancheros, so it's no surprise I like these.

My opinion falls in line with this as well.
Why? I'm guessing because it's the only "new" truck this year. If RAM or anyone else had done a model refresh they'd also be "new truck of the year" award winners.

A truck, for people who don't really need a truck (not to haul anything). I do see many F-150 crew cabs that don't look they haul anything heavier than a bag of mulch, either-so I guess that's the Ridgeline's competition. Nothing like a $40K+ Honda truck that can't haul much!
My friend's son has me looking for a 2013 (and up) around $17,000. I'm subtly trying to steer him away from the notion.

No reason to steer him away from one. He's aware it's not an F-150 or a Silverado. Ridgeline owners give them good reviews.

What a timid, wimpy, rabbit looking front fascia. In the pickup truck world, that thing looks like prey.
Probably because so many pickups are sold to people who like the look but don't really need the function.

Another reason would be that Honda sees a market for this minivan based FWD pickup, just as they did with their FWD minivan based SUV.
Honda is in business to make money by offering vehicles that people want to buy at a price that yields a decent margin, just like every other producer of every sort of product.
I'm not fond of the Ridgeline, but I don't have to be.
