I'm not really a fan of the looks, but my uncle has one of the older generation Ridgelines and he has put it through a lot without any issues.

You could say no one needs a Lexus, Cadillac, Acura, Audi...You get the idea. You can get a smaller less expensive car. People are going to buy what they like and that is fine. I am not here to judge.

I am sure the Ridgeline will work well doing exactly what is was intended to do.

When I picked up my 02 3/4 ton it was a screaming deal at 12,000 bucks with 23,000 miles on it. Only option is A/C. Something like the Ridgeline is not going to tow the trailer I own.
I wasn't even sure a half ton would. Wanted to have a little bit more truck then I needed. We tow about 3000 to 4000 miles a year. I can't imagine paying 40,000 dollars for any vehicle. The most expensive one I own is the Malibu and we paid just at 25,000 for that out the door. It is a fully loaded 2.0 turbo.

I think all my cars combined were 65,000 dollars. I paid 18,000 for the Trans Am 12 years ago with 17,000 miles on it. 12,000 for the Truck 6 years ago with 23,000 miles on it. Those have been paid off for years. I paid 25,000 for the Malibu with 6 miles on it and 20,000 for the Caprice with 12,000 miles on it. A brand new fully loaded 3/4 ton diesel cost that much. There are a lot of "normal" cars that cost more than my Truck and Trans Am have cost me to buy and own on the market right now. It blows my mind.

I just added up the cost for my fleet over the last 17 years, and quite frankly I'm pretty sad--about $97k for six vehicles and 801kmiles. I really need to rethink how I do things.

For that kind of money I could bought a much better house.

I guess you should subtract the current value of your cars for a truer cost per mile.
In 15 years of 2 car ownership and 450k miles, we've only spent $32k on cars but I've had 3 beaters given to us, and have only sold one for $1500 as the rest went to the wreckers... We've spent far more on gas and insurance though and repairs on old stuff adds up too.
If it wasn't for rust though we might have spent half that on cars.

True. Subtracting out current value gets me down to what, $80k? Gas and insurance have to be up there, perhaps as you say more than that purchase cost.

What about the cost of the travel trailer?

So it was right at 24,000 but It is how we spend our vacations. No airfare, no hotels. It has also turned out to be an excellent guest house. I have full hookups at my place and it was occupied for 2 months last year by relatives, so not really like a car at all. Parents stayed in it for two weeks, BIL and SIL for 2, My Sister and BIL for two weeks and the wife's friend from highschool. Only maintenance I have done was new tires last season. Plus it is a tax deduction.

FWIW I completely agree with the first part of your post about personal choice in vehicle selection, but it really did seem to me that you were comparing a new vehicles price to the used deals you mentioned, so thanks for the clarification.

To be fair though if that's your preference you should be comparing used Ridgline prices to your deals, not the cost of the new model.

And thats the issue with midern pickups. I dont care for the wimpy look of the ridgeline, but the obnoxiously large front endson modern pickups scream gaudy, idiotic compensation for other shortcomings and to attempt to look like a bigrig... what was conservative and handsome has become obnoxiously large and silly looking.

I could but I was really comparing it to current 3/4 ton and better trucks. A Ridgeline and my 3/4 ton 6.0/4l80E truck are not even in the same Country.

Plus for 12,000 bucks the Ridgeline just isn't going to tow 8000 lbs. and 32 feet very comfortably.

There's a lot of 'dumbness' on display in this thread.

The bulk of it comes from trying to compare the Ridgeline to an F-150 et al. If you need the things an F-150 can do (ironically most buyers don't) you'll shop in that class. It competes with Tacoma, Colorado, and Frontier.

Then there's assuming that because it can hit $40k that they're all $40k. It starts just under $30k.

After a few annual trips to the Chicago Auto Show looking at the
Ridgeline with all the other trucks I finally gave one a go in 2010.
I have owned "real" trucks since 1983.
I have owned two RL's and like them alot.
It does what many people need.I haul scrap metal and
furniture with mine.
Rides nice in a smaller foot print and has AWD for when winter does come back.
It is not a meant to be used for heavy hauling or towing.

I like it and it will probably do all of what 95% of suburban truck buyers need. What's laughable is the guys that buy 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel bro-dozers to commute to work and never haul more than a 6-pack and a loaf of bread.

Nothing obnoxiously large about them. The heat exchangers necessary to allow those vehicles to operate at their capacity exceed the size of the noses of these trucks and have to slanted, stacked, and otherwise jammed into the front ends.

Even with heat exchangers the size of beds, some trucks, like the Duramax are known own to run on the hot side under load.

Look at the diagrams of these trucks and you'll see the noses should actually be twice as large without all of the cramming.
