It was time to dump my ST Synth, 5k. I wanted something heavy-duty, a 40 weight, but mpg is important for me in this car.(older, 1987) I did not feel like 15w-40 was going to give me the mpg I was looking for. Also, the choices of 40 weight with the HM additives I wanted is not exciting. Why pay $12+ for 5q of HM dino...now with lowered SM add levels, something the HM oils had going for them, when torture-tested M1 T&S is a few $ more? Anyway, the ester content of T&S might help with my ridiculous OT, seals, and mpg. I reused my $6 BOSCH filter as a compramise, this engine is clean...however the ST Synth came out quite dirty at 5k. Anyway, life goes on...I have a decent stash of Chevron Supreme 10w-40 that I could have used, but I feel like the T&S is worth the money. We'll see later this week when I have a few long-distance errands to do. >cool<

How much ester content is in this oil? Does the high amount of magnesium in this oil work better then using just calcium?

I understand the excellent Mobil 1 5W-40 thing, Audi, but how much more MPG do you believe you can get over another synthetic 10W-40, or 15W-40, or 5W-50 in an '87? Just curious.

I got a solid 29mpg w/ the ST synth. I did not want to take a hit on that, but my OT was crazy out-of-control and was looking for more protection than the A3 10w-30 ST.

Here's what I wanted:

40 weight
Good mpg
Seal Conditioning
Decent price

Coincidentially, my car takes exactly 5q with the jumbo filter.

$19.99, yay.

The title of this post sounds like an assignment from Exxon/Mobil like "what I did on my summer vacation".

I managed 27mpg with t&suv on a long trip from washington state to California. This was over multiple fill ups, over mountains at 70-80mph with AC and 3 passengers and their stuff. Car is EPA rated 17 city, 25 highway.

What I find interesting is that if you compare M1 5W/40 and Amsoil 15W/40 the viscosities are nearly identical at 40 & 100C. Amsoil says it's 15W, Mobil says it's 5W

yes but what are they at 0 deg c or -20 deg c, and what is the pour point, that is where the first number is determined, not at 40 deg C.
