Why do you put your wipers up before it snows?

I don’t rely on the defroster to clear the windshield after frozen precipitation, so, I am not relying on it to free the wipers, either. I clear the snow/frost/ice from ALL the windows with a snow brush or ice scraper, and I free the wipers while I am doing it.

Which leads me to believe that those who put their wipers up, are the same ones who fail to clear all of the snow/ice off their windows (which is both stupid and illegal) and drive while looking out a “gun port” waiting for the defroster to clear the windshield.
Don't both of your Mercedes have heated windshield washer fluid? Doesn't Mercedes not only heat the fluid in the windshield washer reservoir, but also runs a heating element from the windshield washer reservoir all the way up to the spray nozzle, so in fact the washer fluid delivery hose itself has a heating element in it?

Speculation your response will be your Mercedes don't see snow, or freezing rain......

All three if out VWs have heated washer nozzles...forgot about that.

You are correct that the Mercedes has heated fluid, heated washer fluid lines, and heated nozzles.

However, it still takes a few minutes for all that stuff to work, because the engine has to warm up to heat the fluid reservoir, which uses a loop from engine coolant, and it takes a few minutes for the base of the windshield to warm electrically and clear the ice, so I scrape the ice. I clear all of the glass.

I don’t stick the wipers in the air.

Your speculation, is incorrect.

Further, whether I have that stuff or not, it is irrelevant. I don’t stick the wipers in the air, and I clear the snow, and ice, before driving regardless of how the cars’ systems work. My Tundra doesn’t have all that stuff and I keep an excellent snow brush/scraper in it.

Look, I think everyone assumes that because I live in Virginia Beach, I don’t see snow. That speculation is also incorrect. Picture taken yesterday. It was 17 degrees and snowing heavily as we loaded the Volvo on the trailer.

I want some heated washer nozzles/lines!

I'm going to say that Astro14's picture from yesterday was NOT in Virginia Beach but up by his kids but these days anything is possible.

Where was the Volvo being hauled to and why? Pictures of said excellent snow brush/scraper please with make and model.

I have some of those extending handle versions where the brush head also spins for push/pull vs. side swipe. Nice for the higher vehicles. A couple people at the firehouse wanted to buy it from me when we were there last snow. Sorry, but if I see them I'll let you know and grab if you want it.

Snow coming this morning here...up to 5" I believe with ice/mix. Current wiper situation for wagons:

Snow/ice this morning. Wipers down. ~5 min from starting up the 4.0 W8 Quattro (ok..."4Motion" but torsen so same as an S4 of that generation) beast to rolling out on Michelin PSAS4s with a clean windshield. Wipers working great. Always laugh at VWs chiming that its below 39 deg F scarying me everytime. Snowflake symbol by the temp readout in case I forget 🤣. Such a great winter car.

Because I probably left the wipers ON (duh) and they would become frozen to the windscreen. Plus I will likely have to lift them to clean the snow and ice out of the moronic cowl area. I have removed two pound chunks of ice out of there more often than not. Often times requires lifting the hood. Yes you have to put the wipers back down to do that LOL.

At that temp the snow is half melted already. Yeah I hated that "cold" chime so much that was one of the first things adjusted with OBD11 to get rid of it.

The window was ice - had to be scraped. I have the one in the Sportwagen changed to 36 which is much better/much less frequent.

Yeah I can't remember which value I set mine to but it was the absolute minimum allowed. I don' think I've seen it trigger ever since even being -20F. I don't need to be told it's cold when my face hurts.

I have had the experience of having the ice rip the rubber part of the wiper blade when I lifted it to clear the windshield. It wasn't a good time.

Why are folks ripping off their wipers? Should be obvious that they are frozen to the glass and need the defroster to warm it up a touch to free them ?

I don't do it all the time, but I'll do it if it's snowing *after* I've been driving. So the windshield is wet, and it'll either refreeze or the snow will melt a little at first, become icy, then you can't get clean wipes. Defrost ain't gonna melt the ice stuck to the wipers when it's 16F outside. This makes it less likely to happen.
My wife’s car the wipers are almost $30
Per side so she lifts the arms so they don’t freeze and tear. The tearing has happened upon first freeze which is upsetting.

The Lexus is not able to have the arms lifted which is why I was upset when the guy left the note on my glass. I could tell he bent the arm. I subsequently conducted my own stake out and have pics of him, but saw no reason to post them here (watching detective shows pays off). I texted them to my buddy and he said the guy even looks like a <not nice person>.

Mostly teenagers that leave the wipers on from the night before. I heard my neighbor yelling at his daughter for destroying her second wiper transmission in her jeep. $400 a pop.
