Why do people hate walmart so much?

I don't see you complaining about IBM, Microsoft or Dell.

So why Wal*Mart?

The market changes, for everyone.

People want $40 disposible DVD players, not $250 units that are repaired by a $75/hour electronics tech.

There are new oppotunities everday.

java ..I've heard this speech many times. Yes, WallMart is an "evolution" ...but it's more of an indicator of the devolution of our status as world citizens. No, we don't want $40 throw away DVD players. We want the top shelf stuff that we can no longer afford ..so more of us get what WallMart has available. It gets rather blurred there on whether you're responding to the market's needs ...or creating them.

Before 1973 you never saw a consumer electronics market other then televisions. Domestic made stereo systems were of the highest quality and very expensive. When the imports came in, they offered relatively cheap ..but apparently high performance components. They were NEVER on par with our domestic offerings ...but since most of us couldn't tell the difference ...what difference did it make
dunno.gif
Then our domestics either went under ..or moved even further into the upper echelon of audiophiledom.

Were they selling us great stuff ...or just junk that we accepted because it was what we could afford ..and how did we know the difference???

As far as the wages, WallMart is turning themselves in the a prolls jobs program with government subsidies. WallMart moves in ..your welfare costs go up. It's a mutually administered program with minor benefits for the privatized administrators.

So you can pat them on the back for creating a whole new door for money flow ...and a new lower floor for the rabble. They do both with excellent results. They're kinda like a "little people" breeder reactor. We never let self destructive behaviors stop us in the past ..so why start now

chris142 - you got over 1 million safe miles? congrats man....thats an achievement, seriously.

JHZR2 - good point.... the vast majority are part time, also like when the whitehouse releases numbers about how much unemployment dropped.... failing to mention that 90% of the difference are part time workers... yeah, employed, until you get hurt or sick. They never take into account part time/full time, if they only counted full time unemployment would be horrendously high

Nah, I would stay and come in with a gun one day to show my dissatisfaction.

i think thats what they want, that or someone to sit there and suck it up all day, possibly have a weight issue and trouble grasping the english language....also, around payday, poor math skills would be preferable, but will train.

That sums it up well enough for me. I avoid Walmart like the plague. Too many trogs there.

Wall-Mart and other stores show a trend in consumer products. Things you buy that break can't be fixed. Too complicated, sometimes, more often repair businesses that rip you off. Why pay for a quality product that will last a long time and give good service it it can't be repaired. Buy something cheaper and if it burps, check it in the trash. Sales people that know anything about their goods are not needed. Repair shops will eventually put themselves out of business. Buy something cheap, let the store exchange it, if they will and throw it away and get another one. Exactly what Wal-Mart is there for. My wife bought a cheap DVD player. After a few months it quit. Took it back to Wal-Mart. The return person took one look at it and just threw in in the corner, still open, and sent her off to get another one. That simple. He did not car, did not say, sorry it broke, just gave he another one. That has got to be a better way to repair things, let the factory make one more. With the young people growing up today, there will be no concept of having something repaired. Take it back to Walmart.

thats the only good thing about walmart....their return policy, some stores you have to get in the ring with the manager, give a blood sample, and first born for store credit.

Well, I meant that the use of a WallMart tends to make more WallMart type jobs ..which in turn makes more WallMart grade employees ...which will never be capable of shopping anywhere else.

It's kinda a regenerative cycle thing.

I am curious if wal-mart pays taxes to the community in which its business sits, or if it pays taxes to AR or wherever its main office is... that could be a big difference!

I agree that most everything at wal mart is junk that is entirely disposable. But what isnt these days? Bottom bidder manufacturers, bottom bidder quality, and what do you get?

I dunno,

That 28oz jar of salsa for $1.64 from Wal*Mart seems to last almost 2x as the 16oz jar of salsa from the local grocery store.

Getting Baked Doritos for $2.00 or $2.50/bag when the local grocier wants either $2.99 or $3.49 for the same sized bag is a pretty sweet deal.

The local grocier isn't a mom and pop, it's Schnucks or Dierbergs, or Shop-n-Save in my area.

Let's see, Skim milk for $1.88/gallon at Wal*Mart, vs $2.50/gallon at the local Schnucks.

If I just need milk, it's a stop at Schnucks, or the Farm Fresh store (something about milk in glass bottles, yum) But if I'm shopping for grocieries, then I pick up a gallon at Walmart.

The mom-and-pop grociers disappeared when Schnucks and Kroger (now gone and/or converted to Shop-n-Save) moved in. Now they have to compete with Wal*Mart.

Such is life.

I don't go to Wal-Mart for several reasons.

1. The employees, for the most part, are extremely inept. Try asking someone where such and such and item is. I've been sent to the wrong side of the store too many times.

2. The employees are often downright rude.

3. The lines at the checkouts are long. I ususually get a checker that is slower than molasses. Come on-you can scan more than one item every 15 seconds.

4. Meats are expensive and of mediocre quality. I get far better meat by purchasing from a local locker. When I buy my cow or pig each year it works out to be a lot less per pound than from Wal-Mart.

5. Many of their items are more expensive than other grocery stores. Minute Maid OJ for example is in a 3qt jug. It's only a few cents less than a local grocery store that has the full gallon. The grocery store is a better per ounce price.

6. I tried to take a prescription there once. Dropped it off and was told it would be about 20 minutes. 20 minutes later I returned and was told it would be another 20 minutes. Came back in 30 minutes and it still wasn't ready so I sat down and waited. 2 hours after I dropped it off I asked for the prescription back and took my business elsewhere. There were only a couple other people waiting for prescriptions as well.

Took the prescription down the road to a Walgreens and it was filled and I was out the door in 15 minutes.

I may be one of the few left, but I believe that customer service means something. In my opinion I don't believe that Wal-Mart has good customer service. Therefore I don't patronize them any longer.

i could make a pretty sweet money/inbred/education joke here.... but....

....so those express lanes.....almost 9 out of 10 times you will see someone with half a cart full of junk filling up the conveyor belt, apparently walmart also needs signs that yell out "15 items or less" very loudly in 4 different languages on a nonstop basis, the employees don't care, you have 50 items? come on down....

michaelc80 - nice to see another person believing in good customer service! I definitely agree.
cheers.gif
I'm willing to pay more for better customer service.

Same at our wal-mart. Grocery supplies are far more expensive than Vons/Ralphs, etc... Also, it seems like the TLE department actually tries to be as slow as possible. They have 10+ guys and only 2-3 are actually doing anything. I also know what you mean about checkout lines. Our wal-mart has 15+ lanes and usually 2-3 are open. Pretty sad.

I do shop Walmart on occasion. But we have a great True Value Hardward store here in town. In the last several years I have purchased 2 lawnmowers, a weed wacker, an air conditioner, and probably sone other larger stuff. I buy all my plumbing and hardware stuff there. I know in many cases I pay more, but its the cost of very excellent service. And when I purchased my Echo WeedWacker there a couple of weeks ago I got a better piece of equipment than available at Home Depot. (IMHO)

Let me point out up front that I really don't like Wal-Mart, especially its well documented practices of paying and treating its employees poorly and its squeezing suppliers to the point of forcing them to have products built overseas. That said . . .

JSharp touched on one real issue with the ever-popular mom 'n pop store: all too often, all they employ is mom 'n pop. And maybe a couple of mom 'n pop's kids, working for free. And if you look a little closer, mom 'n pop are barely ekeing out a living with their store anyway and don't have any bennies either. They'd almost be better off working for a big box store.

This has to be said: some of the worst service I've ever received in a store has been in "traditional" mom 'n pops. Dirty floors, dusty shelves, dark areas without adequate light, smoke all over from the owner's cigarette, the owner's "taste" in music pumped up way too loud, and bad, snotty attitudes from the owner who is dependent like all other retailers on you, the customer. That's not to mention lack of stock and what is on hand being grossly overpriced. Or the ever-popular closing down for weeks so the owner can go on vacation or not opening on time because the owner felt like sleeping in, and in the meantime you badly needed something he sold. These practices would generally never be allowed at the big retailers.

Sure, some of the stores Wal-Mart and other big retailers displace are true losses to the community. But when the big boxes arrive, many of these little guys deserve what they get and get what they deserve.

My WalMart service is nothing like is described above. btw- before you rake on employees, my nephew works there and he is pretty sharp. Myt last TLE experience, they took my car in w/o a ticket and put a new valve stem in for me, no charge.

The state and local sales taxes collected are kept in the state and locality. The property taxes paid by the stores are kept by the local tax authorities.

Of course the taxes on Walmart corporate profits are paid to the fed and to the state of Arkansas...

I don't hate walmart, I generally hate going there. The Walmarts around here are always crowded, long lines, many rude customers, etc.
