Why Can't I Just Be Happy?

What is wrong with me? I can't stick with a single brand of oil more than a year. Do any of you have some cure for this addiction?

Schaeffer, Federated, Shell Rotella, Delo, Quaker State, Pennzoil, Amsoil, Super Tech, Amazon Prime, Acura, etc.
(All in 2019)

Now I am becoming obsessed with gear oils.

I guess I'm just gonna have to learn to live with it.

Too bad we can't get jobs at the test centers where you find rooms filled with many identical engines running 24/7.

Or, work in a garage where fleet maintenance is done and recorded. You'd be exposed to real world data sources.

Then we'd learn how quickly we could redefine our interest and fascination.

I feel your pain. I have flip flopped over the years and for the most part used either Pennzoil, or XOM products, for well over 40 years now, with a hint of Castrol, and 2 OCIs with Amsoil. Beaters got other brands on occasion. For a while I thought PU was going to be it for me, I was wrong. I'm back to XOM, ESP to be exact, and once my PU stash is gone all three vehicles will be using XOM products again. But that could change, maybe.

Castrol Edge 0w40 will solve all your problems

But for real.... as long as it isn't one of the "oils" PQIA has tested to not be anything you'd want to put in your car, it's more than okay.

I know what you're all saying is true. On the other hand, maybe I don't? I'm a Toyota/Lexus man for life. I'm a Sony man for life.I'm a Wendy's taco salad made for life. I'm in Allen Edmonds dress shoes man for life. I'm a Michelin tire man for life.

But I no longer have any loyalty to an Engine oil. I find this interesting.

Me too I can stick to one oil until the next one comes on with a good sales price. Seems to happen weekly.

Remember, the happiness you find in life comes from FAR more than motor oil.

There are greases, coated rotors, made in the US OEM parts, spark plugs, bell housings, manual transmissions,..........

Try to take on transmission fluid. There are so many expensive boutique fluids out there, that I question if they are truly needed.

In the end it is a quality specified commodity. And like all decisions, whether we like it or not, choosing one is an emotional decision. Many have an emotional connection to price, others marketing.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy worked for me. Add in a bit of mindfulness training and you will be good to go!

Can't never go wrong with Mobil 1 . It's been proven in all situation for many years . Also when you sell your car and you say it's been using Mobil 1 since day one . Your car will go up in value . Try that with other brand . Mobil 1 brand is strongest .

Reasonably priced, easily sourced oils/lubes that meet specs for the application make me happy.

Try buying your next 2-3 OCI (including filters) stock at the same time. Helps keep things consistent.

I buy an extra quart of whatever I'm using to keep as an unopened spare (OCD/neuroses/whatever) so I get anxiety

when it doesn't match up with what is in the sump.
