Why all the crying over the Ecore filters?

I think these filters arent desinged to be taken apart, and they might not hold up together when cutting one open for inspection with the thermo bonded end caps, but at the same time, being thermo bonded like they are, they just might be perfectly fine when assembled and inside the filter canister. I dont think not having a coil spring is a big issue over a leaf spring either. I think people are taking these filters apart to quickly judge them as being bad, or not as good as the previous design, without knowing how this filter really works in comparison.

I recently took apart a 3600 ecore, the leaf spring on the top prevented the fiber material from creating a seal. And since the fiber was not bonded in one area at all, if used would have allowed unfiltered oil to pass. When the element was pulled from the can, it was not damaged in any way. I just can't drive down the road wondering if my fiber is bonded or not.

I have taken apart about 60 of them. Be scared, be very scared. Taking apart the filter does not cause anything unusual, if you hae taken some apart you would see what I am talking about. The media is coming loose where it is "bonded" to the endcaps.

Hey D.I.F.,

You can always cut up a filter after you use it to see how it has performed. If you do see any problems at that point, the only thing you have lost is the knowledge of whether anything was visibly wrong before use, or if the damage occurred only during use. You may not be able to tell if it was defective from the factory, a bad design, or just not up to the job, in other words. It is a good thing, as we get older, to start questioning (and verifying) the things we may have always previously assumed. We are talking about oil filters here, but this would apply to anything we are spending our money on.
After a while we stop believing what the marketing and sales types are always bragging about, and start verifying things for ourselves. Experience trumps a sales pitch any day.
You can’t get any personal experience unless you personally look for yourself. Cutting these things open can be a real eye opener, you can make your own decisions better after you check things out yourself.

With this design & the way word of mouth/internet travels, Champion may start being compared to Fram. I'm hoping AC Delco techs/honchos mandate stricter Ecore guidelines with Champion... otherwise I'm switching to Motorcraft or Wix when my stash of good, older ACs disappear in a few years.

Why all the crying over the Ecore filters?

Because some are not happy unless they have something to complain about. No matter what it is, someone is going to find fault with.

Like the saying; "you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time"

The Ecore web page says pleats are thermally bonded to fiberous end caps. But it looks like the hot glue gun needed a new stick. Regardless of the clicker, thermally bonded means thermally bonded which it wasn't. It may be just a matter of getting the assembly line straightened out.

For the record..there is NO glue used to bond the endcap to the media when the E-core element is made.

That is why Champ says the endcap is "thermo" bonded. Not glued. Not plastisoled. No epoxyed. Not urethane, either.

Yet when you cut open a new element..the end cap is bonded. And yes you can tear it off should you try.

Some elements had problems because of teething the new purpose built equipment on the production line. Which QC has handled.

Some may still encounter the first generation of E-core in the field..and on vehicles. The reject/complaint rate was less than 1%. But since QC has made changes it is significantly less than 1%...more likely .00001%.

Which is why people like AC/GM and others are now onboard with the E-core design.

Will the new Mobil 1 oil filters also use the Ecore design ??

Good question...

I think you're reffering to the new extended mileage Mobil 1 filters.

We'll both have to wait and see. Wouldn't want competition to know..

Honestly....I haven't asked. I think Champ would want Mobil to tout their stuff first. When Mobil comes out with them and they hit the shelves, then we'll see.

Is it possible to make an extended mileage E-core. Sure, I don't see why not.

If I have learned anything from the administration of this board, is that veiled comments that continue from a thread that has been closed is a nogo. That was not warrantied or needed.
