Who’s making the best 5w30 these days?

This right here is top-quality, just look at the checkered flag on the bottle.

And, if you're as fortunate as we are here in Texas, there's a store that sells it on just about every street corner.

Just don't use it as fry oil when frying your turkey. Cheers and happy Thanksgiving.
What’s the DG stand for, Darn Good oil

I think Warren distribution is guilty for supplying

best oil?..many factors to consider,as engine type and condition of the engine, climate, driving habits ,short trips, brand loyalty,,,, ,,,,,,Amsoil ss 5w-30 would be my first pick for best oil & for the extended oci and Fram ultra filter,,,,,,,,then Schaeffer's 9000,,,,Penzoil ultra Platinum, Valvoline ep, Royal Purple, etc ,,,,,,quaker state ultimate 5w-30, Havoline pro-ds, if on a budget,,,,,,the list goes on. just stay with name brands as the best policy.

What don't you like about it?
Just a personal qualitative assessment. The Engine doesn't run as smooth, quiet and consistent as with QS FS 10W30 - or even dealer bulk SS. Maybe there is some cleaning going on. I am only 600 miles into this OCI. On the plus side, I will say that the LTA fuel milage is now back to typical for this unit.
I also had to thin it with M1 0W16 to recover low and midrange torque. I didn't have to do that with the QS. This Ford/Mazda D.I 2.0 liter has been very tolerant of stepping up a grade until now. Possibly the engine is on a downward spiral from so much fuel dilution.
Never had any such pronounced issues "back in the days" of port injection, moderate compression and timing belts.

If I still have the car in the Spring I will have another UOA performed. My OCI on this unit is Fall/Spring - not by mileage.
As always, YMMV.

Under those circumstances, I'd choose your favorite premium syn that is readily available (Mobil 1 EP, Castrol Edge EP, etc).
I have 106,000 miles on my 2016 Chevy SS Sport Sedan bought new. The LS3 was designed and in service years before “Dexos” was a thing….So I run Mobile 1 FS Euro 0W-40 in my SS. Be a rebel and run an oil good for cold starts and track days.
Former M1 0W40 FS oil was known to shear down to a high 0W30 weight oil fairly quickly as it was barely a 40 weight oil to begin with . Not sure if the latest version of the M1 0W40 FS still has the same formula / shear traits ?

The engine only puts out 67 HP per liter in stock form. A base Camry puts out 83 HP per liter using 0W16 and can go for 250K plus miles. Don't overthink the oil.

The trick GM doesn't want the rest of the world to catch on to: cramming as much displacement into the smallest space as possible via pushrods 🤣

It's kind of incredible the displacement they're getting out of the LS small block these days. 6.2 isn't even one of the bigger ones.

I'm pretty convinced HPL is great. Which of their oils is best for me? The LS3 as mentioned predates dexos1 and isn't GDI. Would I be best with the euro formula or should I stick with the pcmo premium plus? Is the no VII worth considering here?

Yep, either way it’s great for me …barely a 40 for the OCI or quick drop to a thick 30.
Same-same in my LS 3.

HPL is great IF your goal is to run extended 15k+ intervals. Otherwise, there are a slew of commercially available products at your local Walmart that will serve you very well

I generally drive few enough miles that time on the fill becomes an issue before mileage, but I like using an extended OCI capable oil because I’m a busy dad who likes to do the maintenance himself and that means sometimes there’s an extra bit of mileage happening before I can get to it, and it’s nice not feeling that “oh I shouldn’t use the car for this trip because the oil is on it’s last leg” stress.

I'm not telling you not to use HPL if that's what you want, but in your situation there's nothing wrong with using Mobil 1 EP or any of the other extended protection oils for a significant savings.

Mobil 1 EP, pup, Castrol edge EP, is more than up to the task and will offer significant cost savings as well as be readily available at most Walmarts
