What is the cheapest oil available for purchase?

Essentially, you need to find "close out" deals on inexpensive stuff. Think Rural King and other farm supply places. Or maybe Lowes; I've read they often will clear the shelves with massive discounts just to turn stock.

There is no assured place to go; you're going to have to put effort into finding it locally. Nothing you could order and have delivered would make it cost feasible.

20 replies and nobody's asked what store offers a quart for a quart?

edit - are you on that Motul thing?

Bingo 😊

Thanks, I think that's the way I'll go. Even if I have to go to a 5 gallon pail, it will cover me for a long time.

What this reminds me of. I had a friend who paid his utility bills in person in cash. He had no checking account. (another long story)

To pay his telephone bill at the supermarket, there was a $1.00 service charge. He decided he could buy a money order at Walmart for 42 cents, and a postage stamp then cost 56 cents, for a total of 98 cents.

SO, to save 2 cents, he would buy the money order and mail his payment in.

I think there might be people in the known Universe less responsible with money than me, but I haven't seen any to date 😇 .

If we had to adapt your friend's case to mine - let's put it as:
- I am not looking to save those two cents, or even that dollar. It's gone.
- I am looking into being able to spend that dollar at home and get a printed money order, rather than go to the supermarket, bring my own ink and paper, ask them to print the bill for me, having to take some recycled ink back in a vial in my pocket that might or might not leak, and not being sure whether they will accept to do it or not in the first place, because it depends on which cashier is there on any given day.

So you want to buy inexpensive oil so you can return it for store credit ? What's it worth $3-$5? Hardly worth the effort. I bet you are the guy that returns used oil to Walmart for the next guy to buy .

I'm frugal but not scheming like this. I believe in karma.

Maybe hang out at the county recycle center and take used oil from someone who's about to dump it or ask your local gas station that does changes.
I think this is a good idea. Or swing by your local auto parts store and see if they have any jugs that haven't been dumped yet.

Post on Facebook. I'm sure there's someone who would be thrilled to not have to drive to the county oil recycler or auto parts store.

Or just bring an empty jug with you and have the kids fill it up with used oil from the tank where you go.

Or just learn how to change your own oil. It's easier than all of this mess. I assure you.

Buying and dumping brand new oil to save a few bucks just seems so wasteful. You could get Quaker State Euro for $23 a jug at Walmart that meets all the specs of the Motul X-Cess Gen 2 you're running, and you're not running all over creation to make this scheme work out.

This is getting tiring, really.

Can someone please explain to him what this is about. I tried over and over, but you can't force people to actually read and understand before playing judge and jury.

Maybe someone else will get luckier?

It sounds like a lot of effort for not a lot of gain. I guess if you really want to game it, you can offer oil changes to friends or family members if they purchase and bring the oil to you. Essentially making your labor free for them and then you could use their old oil which cost you nothing for your little scheme. I feel like doing it this way you’re helping people and this makes it at least somewhat of a reasonable venture. Just my two cents.

The OP is not doing anything underhanded, but is taking advantage of a legitimate warranty process by a specific seller. The juice is not worth the squeeze for most of us, but you can read about the process in this earlier BITOG thread:

Free Lifetime Oil Changes

Is this to take advantage of FCP Euro return policy?

In which case, it is fraud, because you’re not returning the product you bought from them.

Otherwise, it’s a lot of work for a couple dollars.

Fair point.
The gain is a relative thing.

Per the store's "lifetime guarantee even on oils" policy you buy oil from them, use it, then return it used in its original container and get credit for a new one. Discussed above (even if still not understood by a few, judging by some comments 😊).

In my calculations, it ends up getting me a $55 jug of 5qts for $10ish (in winter when I don't do my oil change myself) + the hassle to drive to the store (which is nil, as the only Aldi in my area is there and I need to go there every now and then).

In summer I'll do my oil changes myself and recover my own used oil, so I won't need all these gymnastics, and the jug of new oil will cost me just the drive and the hassle.

Indeed. But I bought that car new in September and it has been fed on Motul exclusively after the first 1500 miles. So I want to keep the streak for the first year or two and have some oil analysis done. Eventually I'll probably just switch to Valvoline Restore and Protect (see what I did here 😊), unless the Motul turns out to be magic (which it is not). I am just partial to Motul, I used it in my youth back in Europe.

That solves it. Let's lock the thread. I already have returned oil to them that has been mixed in a common recovery container with the other oils I drained from my other cars, I'll have to atone for that too.

I think my 4th grader would likely be excited about this relative amount of gain. Me not so much.
